I have worked in the HR space for the past 9 years, however most of my experience has been in Talent Acquisition. I do want to move into a People Operations/Generalist role. I’m planning to go for a HR certificate but unsure if I should go for a PHR or SHRM. Please advise!

Talk to some people at your company that are currently in the roles you are interested in to see if they have the certifications. My company doesn’t care about certifications but cares about degrees. My undergrad is in HR and my masters is in Org Psych.

The PHR was always the standard in the industry. SHRM created their own test because of dollar signs. With that being said, an employer would recognize either. But based on how the SHRM certification came about I went with the PHR which has been around for much longer. I don’t know how much an employer would necessarily value either exam in terms of your look to switch to a generalist. Your best bet is in a smaller HR department where your TA experience would be valuable but you’d also get exposure elsewhere as in a smaller department you need to wear many hats. Look to midsize or smaller firms.

like

PHR is easier I heard, but SHRM holds a little more value. You should check if your company will sponsor/pay for you to take the test! (And let you shadow your HR team!)

like

Agree - shadow and make it known that you’re interested.

Only sharing my personal perspective, but, the grass is not always greener. I started out in TA and desired to shift to more of an HRBP role. I chose SHRM-CP instead of PHR. Sitting in the vast expanse of the HRBP role, I miss the targeted TA role where I was responsible for a single aspect and could really focus on excellence. However if I were in a TA role, I’d likely get bored with the similarity of the day to day and long again for the “who knows what’s coming next” of the HRBP role. Or, maybe my flip flopping is simply a character flaw. Long story short, I recommend SHRM-CP.

like

Most companies don’t value those certificates, but do value a masters degree in HR. If they do value the certificates, or if you want one anyway, they’re mostly the same so it doesn’t really matter, but the PHR is a teeny bit tougher and I believe focuses just a bit more on employee relations.

like

I think both the certifications and the MHRM are useless, that being said I know many people I’ve worked for would rather see the degree than the cert. Agree to disagree on the MBA - generally not worth it.

How to make a leap from UI/UX into product design? What skills should a PD have? With 5 YOE and I still feel like a junior. I know the basics of testing and conducting workshops, but I don't know how to develop those skills further. My company focuses on UI and I haven't been lucky to land a PD job. Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??
