I just accepted a new position last week and am scheduled to start mid-July. I have a couple of concerts this summer (1 on a Saturday and 1 on a Thursday evening). I also have a wedding to attend the weekend of Labor Day weekend and a week trip planned in February. Should I alert them to all of this now? Or wait until I sign the paperwork?

Other than the February one, do the others interfere with the work week? If not, just give them a week heads up. In Oct/Nov you can let them know about February. Normally it isn’t a big deal, but I get why you’re asking, so that’s how I’d approach it.

like

The one is a Thursday night so I was most likely going to take a half day. The other concert does not. I’m moving from a small firm to a large firm so I’m not sure what the expectations are for weekends and holidays.

I’d wait until you start. The concerts are at night so I’d just give a week heads up for that, the wedding a months notice then reminder a few days before. The trip I’d give three months notice then a reminder a few weeks before and again a few days before. It’s good to be over communicative but no reason to mention anything now

like

Thank you!

I would tell them about the weeklong trip now. It will establish goodwill. The other events are just a normal social life and as the other posters have suggested, can be announced in the normal flow of the year.

like

Thank you!

Why would you tell work about evening concerts?

I would not worry about this, or the Labor Day wedding to be honest. Unless you are a staff attorney, I cannot imagine this is relevant at all and I think you should think about starting off with appropriate WL boundaries.

I am sad that some of you feel the need to tell your work about your evening or weekend plans that don’t involve trips. I suppose that’s how it is in Big Law, but coming from a smaller law firm, that is insane to me.

I don’t disagree with you. I’m coming from a smaller firm and moving into a larger firm (not necessarily big law). I would never think to tell my current firm about a weekend event unless it interferes with something on the calendar. I’m just not sure how larger firms work when it comes to weekend, evenings, and holiday time. The wedding is arguable a trip in the sense that I’m heading to the hotel Friday after work and not coming home until Monday sometime.

For the concerts/weekend stuff, I think it may depend on your workload and upcoming deadlines. If there’s nothing pending then I wouldn’t worry about needing to communicate a bigger heads up. A week is sufficient if at all necessary. If you find out about conflicting deadlines then you might want to mention it sooner. But definitely communicate ahead of time for the February trip. I would personally communicate sooner rather than later and set a reminder in your own calendar to remind them 3 months in advance, a month, then the week before.

How much is the pay for data roles in the UK? I'm a data analyst with 2 years of experience and a Masters degree in Data Analysis. I have a decent project portfolio in data science. I'm experienced in SQL, Power BI, Excel and Python. I'm eager to land a data analyst or data science role. One of the companies offered me 36K. Is this fair? If not what should I aim for? Have an offer from a dream company but I'll need to go in at a lower level. Knowing that I can bring a lot of value to the company (read- I know my worth), I negotiated with the hiring manager to have a level/comp review 6 months after employment. If I hit all my goals (ie, prove myself) within that time frame, I'll get a promotion and salary adjustment.
QUESTIONS:
Should this be in writing in the offer letter?
How detailed should it be? I assume I won't know what goals to set till I start...

This is my first job in a large corporate company, and I’m trying to gauge how long it normally takes to move from entry level to another internal position in the insurance industry. I have been applying internally for a year now and I am wondering if this is normal or if my company is just slow? I am a top performer, with great metrics, and I have some wonderful connections I’ve made who support me. I just can’t seem to move up. How long did it take you to move up? How many tries did it take?

I found a company I was really excited about working at. I applied for the job and went through 5 rounds of interviews. At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!

I would love to work in LA more than anything, but I can’t afford to move there which means I’ll just have to stick it out in South Carolina for some time. But unfortunately, South Carolina doesn’t have many opportunities in the media/entertainment industry. Any leads, tips, or advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

I have two offers, one from Am Law 100 firm and one from Am Law 200 firm. Am Law 200 firm is offering 40K more (otherwise the firms have same hours target and, based on discussions, similar culture). I’m trying to decide between the two based on long term career prospects, both offer opportunity for NEP (not sure how realistic it is at either). Also not sure of overall earning potential down the road. Is the 40K now worth it or am I likely to make that up at the Am Law 100 firm in the future?
