OP there’s a serious divide in this country between two sides. Each thinking that the other side wants to run this country into the ground and is full of people with dispicable personality traits. As you lean left, it’s probably hard for you to imagine how anyone on the right could POSSIBLE have an axe to grind with someone who thinks the way you do. But it goes both ways. One half of this country is not evil. One half is not a bunch of bigots. Don’t buy into the hype. Fox News is right for sure. And inflammatory yes. But no worse than the outlet on the equal but opposite end implying half the nation is full of nazis. You have to gut check your perspective a little bit before you suggest we should all be outraged over this list of brands.
The reality is, Fox News is the most watched basic cable network. Many of those brands would be neglecting (at least) half their audience.
I’m not a media planner, but one of my clients is on that list, and I wouldn’t tell them to boycott.
It’s Fox News, not ISIS training.
You, my friend, should get a job as a media planner.
@SD1 seriously? it’s not a binary “are you ISIS level evil or not”, there are shades of grey. Bankrolling a propaganda network to spread bigotry, racism, and sexism to a large audience seems like an ethical red flag to me.
OP you might be in the wrong industry....
“I’m not biased, I’m correct.” Dangerous territory .
@S2 do some due diligence (especially as a strategist) on what’s going on before calling something “the worst kind of activism” in 2018
@S1 and perhaps you, my friend, should get a conscience. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
@CD1 has a good point for consideration and I largely agree on the 50/50. That said im not sure there is an equal and opposite version of FoxNews that hosts blatant provable lies and never recinds the countless conspiracy stories it touts even after prooven false.
Its hard to walk away from the ratings of fox, but the median age is something like 65, you're going to find those eyes with basically spill from any TV plan. As media planners we should be able to compensate delivery from losing one network.
But i think it needs to be the clients decision. Possible way there is to actually get clips of fox news vitriol and then keep it running to the next commercial break. We often attack all advertisers of fox vs putting their ads in actual context.
Racists hate it when you call them racists.
Also two sides do not mean equally moral or ethical possitions. We’ve been a split nation before—with one side believing slavery was great and the other not. They aren’t equal viewpoints. The need usually presents two sides as equal when they are not, not are they supported by similar numbers of people.
We should be more afraid of how disgusted our descendants will be of us in 100 years, especially with regard to institutional inequality and climate change, not to mention the mess we’ve made of other countries and cultures in the last 50 years (coughyemencough).
I'm fairly certain every paycheck you cash is predicated on your agreement to shill your clients products and services to as many people as possible. If you think agencies have a higher calling to be agents of change, your are either grossly misinformed, endearingly naive, or sadly lying to yourself. You, and we, are paid to advertise. I respect well intentioned principles, but we are the grease monkeys of selling shit, not the white swans of progress (however you view that). If you want to be a swan, stop taking the money and go join a think tank or political party.
This self- righteous and sanctimonious attitude is partly to blame for why some clients bring work in-house. They want agencies to connect to the consumerate to build a business, not the citizenry to build a consensus. They don't want to pay for a crusade, they want to pay for a campaign.
The worst kind of activism. Argue for what you want - let companies sell their products freely.
My point is that only one side feels it’s spreading hatred. And the other side feels the same about left leaning news outlets like msnbc. I think the premise of your question is deeply baked within your own biases about what Fox News represents to people and you may not see that.
@SD2 Wake up. Have a conscience. Read everything above before jumping to conclusions. Or don’t, keep your head in the sand, and keep thinking that because we’re in advertising we somehow don’t have a chance to do what we can to hold companies accountable.
Well I think the people who watch Fox News would probably agree with you that racism is wrong. But disagree with you about what defines it. Calling something a Muslim ban for instance is an example of more liberal media fanning flames and calling racism foul, while the right would argue “no this isn’t to target Muslims. It’s to stop countries with less than stellar background checks from entering the country.” You can argue the differences and the subtities of the legislation but I just bring it up as a point because I think there can be a self righteousness from the left thinking that they stand against racism and therefor everyone on the right is racist. And I think that’s not really that fair
But in your example, you are watching it and saying it’s racist. And I’m telling you others who watch it don’t see it that way. So it’s never just about the news. It’s how it’s perceived
@OP If you can only see the world through your perspective, you’re a rubbish planner.
Empathy is our most basic job requirement.
OP, can you clarify what we should be outraged about?
We can start with this: https://twitter.com/kevinroose/status/1057017753343803392?s=21
