How hard is the path from lit to GC?
I have recently joined EY SaT group as senior consultant recently in Netherlands. I’m tripple masters in MS economics, MBA and MS business analytics. Have 4 YOE in different industries but no M&A experience specifically. Any ideas what company should be offering me? I’ll be working as expert on commercial due diligence, FDD and valuation teams and doing automation alongside. is it wise to demand higher salary or promotion soon after I have proven that I can work and do it better than most?EY

It likely will give you better shot and get you more respected in the corporate world. Sorry to raise a rare opinion than almost everyone else here. I have a few friends doing PhD in business school - first, it’s much MUCH harder to get into. Most programs only have handful phds every year (read less than 10). Second, a ton of opportunities to work with industry companies during your time doing research. (One of my friends got funding from Tencent and worked very extensively with them.) Finally, it’s much easier to get an associate professor role in business school than other majors (stats or whatever). Well obviously your PhD concentration matters, but overall, I think my friends at bschool PhD programs have pretty good exit no matter industry or consulting or academia. (But you obviously need to get in a good one which is actually not very easy...)
No, most companies, especially in industry, don't have a ton of respect for PhDs. Some even have a biased against them assuming the person will be too academic and not practical, business oriented. In my experience, if you do it, it would be just for yourself.
I also agree with McK1, couldn’t have said it better myself! I have nothing but respect and admiration for those doing PhDs at top business schools because they are so super selective.
Wtf is a phD in business admin.. get a real phd in statistics or something quantitative
Agree with McK1 wholeheartedly
PhD is really only worth it if you want to teach. Too academic and not practical. Plus at that point you’re not getting more money than an MBA hire so it’s not worth it financially
If you do an MBA with a PhD then you’ll be a powerhouse and everyone will want you. But yea, PhD itself is only if you want to get into teaching. Getting Corp strat gigs after 4-5 years in school may not work out
Sometimes campus hires miss the definitive schedule and feedback patterns of school. Not saying this is you, but maybe your longing for “being a nerd” could be understood differently - potentially leading to a different kind of change than a return to academia.
Or, maybe not. What do I know?!
Don't phD usually end up in quantative trading firms like Renaissance Tech or go into education?
(Also I think it applies to all M7...)
PhD in a more technical area can get you into MBB, but why spend the extra years when your goal is corp strat?

Couldn't disagree more with mck1. 20 yrs I'm industry here, ending as sr leader before coming over to consulting.
^are you a PhD in business school? Also which school did you go to? I will have a hard time to believe HBS PhD will be less successful than HBS MBA (especially based on my small sample size..) but obviously each individual is different and there’s no formula for guaranteed success.
