I received my CPA license in March and the CPA firm that I've worked at for 3 years have basically ignored that it happened. No raise, they haven't announced it to my co-workers or clients, and they haven't even bothered to congratulate me. I've received interest non-stop since getting my license. Is this level of disrespect worth moving to another company over?

Disrespect, really? I think all this stems from your misguided expectations more than anything. It's a big personal and professional accomplishment for sure, but I never once expected any praise from anyone, let alone my firm. I did qualify for a one time bonus which was really nice, but a raise isn't expected or the norm.

Congrats, but I think you played yourself by expecting anything from your firm. Check if there's a policy about one-time bonuses for passing the exams though

you really need to get with the times.

valid points, but also exactly why some firms are hurting.

If your CPA firm won’t recognize you, I will. Congrats on getting your CPA license. 🎉👏👏🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🎊🍾🍾🥂

Getting your CPA license is necessary to move forward at most firms, but having it doesn’t do much to the value of a staff.

likehelpful

I think it is a major accomplishment and every firm should give some recognition. A lot of people in management don’t know how to motivate their staff and make them feel worthy. They should realize that a little more attention in that direction will create a loyal employee that will work harder towards the success of their employer.

like

Have others before you gotten the recognition? If so, I can see where you are coming from. If others haven't, then it sounds like this company may not have the culture you are looking for where life events are celebrated/announced and you may have gotten your hopes up with your current firm. If being supported and celebrated in life events is important to you as part of the firm culture then maybe it is time to look elsewhere. Just know there's usually "something" at every firm that isn't for everyone. Just have to find the one that fits the best for you.

likehelpful

You have been overthinking. Just share the news on your Linkedin and get your CPA bonus (if your firm has that policy).

likehelpful

Send out a firmwide email and announce it yourself! But seriously if you work at a bigger firm then don’t expect much of a celebration with any life event. Moving might help if being recognized is the kind of thing you want but really only if you go to a smaller firm

like

1) Congrats, it’s a massive personal accomplishment and you should definitely be proud.

2) Becoming a CPA when you work at a CPA firm is a pretty basic expectation. I wouldn’t consider it disrespectful that they didn’t celebrate you meeting a requirement of the profession. While I would have personally celebrated it, if your firm not making a big deal of it is “disrespect” to you, you have a LONG career ahead of you.

likeuplifting

I’d argue that acknowledging team milestones - even the “expected” ones - is part of good leadership and culture-building. Sure, becoming a CPA is a professional requirement, but it’s also the result of years of hard work, exams, and sacrifice. Recognition doesn’t have to be a big celebration, but a simple “congrats” goes a long way.
Dismissing someone’s disappointment as a sign that they’re not cut out for the long haul feels a bit harsh. If firms want to retain talent, creating an environment where people feel seen and valued (even for expected milestones) is key.
This lack of good leadership is likely a huge reason why many are not interested in a career in accounting.

likesmart

It would be a very human thing to want to congratulate you. I think if anything you’ve just learned that you’re a number to the firm and not a valuable one. If having genuine connections is important - ya I’d leave.

likehelpful

I would dip if other firms are showing interest. Get the value you feel you are deserved. Ignore the rest.

likehelpful

What do you want your company to do? Send out an email to all of your clients saying “Staff Accountant 1 just got his CPA! Join us in congratulating him/her!”? Your clients do not care

like

Shit, you sound like an awful coworker to be around. We get catering for everyone who passes. Pretzels or whatever ppl want

like

We don't give raises for passing CPA exams. We do have a CPA bonus policy - that's on you to know what the policy is and to submit for your bonus if one applies. I personally try to make a big deal out of it when someone on my team passes....but it's basically a "yay! congratulations! you can pick where we order lunch from today."

likesmarthelpful

Congrats on passing the CPA, it’s a minimum requirement to stay competitive in public.

Congratulations. Now get back to work.

As a CPA with 31 years of experience, I wouldn’t consider what happened as disrespectful. I started in Big 4 and it was a requirement for employment. Back then, you tested only in May and Nov and you had to take all 4 parts with no computer. Fail any one section with less than 50, you lose all parts you passed. The studying was much more intense to pass and success rates were low. Nobody cheered you on at the firm. Once in corporate, nobody blinked an eye when I applied and received the actual license. I was just grateful they covered the costs of CPE and my annual license renewal. Many companies now don’t cover either. You need to view this as your own personal achievement and smile. It’s a great achievement that will make you stand out in the future. Instead of wasting time wondering. you could ask your boss if they recognize passing the exam. If the company or firm doesn’t, oh well. Continue to learn and add skill sets that make you invaluable. I added Leases ASC 842 , SEC Reporting and Technical Accounting to mine. It has made an intense difference on finding work as potential employers cannot believe I have all of that experience. Try finance or other disciplines in accounting if you’re not fulfilled today. All will appreciate the CPA. Best wishes

like

Look for a better opportunity if you feel unappreciated by your firm. The main question is whether this is consistent with others' experience or if you are actually being treated differently. Both firms I worked at during the beginning of my career made a big deal about when someone got their license. Maybe that's changed in the last 15 years...

like

Lol are you for real ?

like

Yes big corporations don't care, but your immediate team members should have congratulated you... I think the bigger the company, more out of touch they are with their employees... which is why I always prefer working a mid-size company atleast you get to interact with people & know a little about each others lifes. after all we spend 40 hours at work... if you are looking for workplace where they appreciate and celebarte life events & host get together, then try looking for a different...

I’m not someone who usually seeks validation — I ldon’t have insta , fb
But when I passed, I realized that a part of me was quietly hoping for some recognition. It’s such a huge commitment that comes with giving up social events, time with family and kids, relaxing evenings, travel, and more. And until the exam is behind you, it’s always lingering in the back of your mind — that constant weight, taking away your peace of mind. Book a trip. Go somewhere. Celebrate yourself.

Not going to lie, this happened to me at a small local firm. I dipped shortly after for mid-market and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Did I just do a mistake by quoting too high a number? Please let me know your opinions.

Does anyone have experience interviewing with Deloitte Internal Services? I had my final interview a week and a half ago, and received positive feedback throughout. The hiring manager had positive things to say and mentioned they hoped to make a decision by the end of last week. It’s now Friday the week after. The role still shows as “Interviews in Process.” We did discuss potential start dates, but no salary. Any experience with receiving offers for an internal services role? Is this common?
