Microsoft is hiring an account executive and I’m really interested in the role. I have B2B sales experience in a different industry, but my skills include lead generation, prospecting, account management, negotiating, etc (all within the C Suite and other decision makers).
Would appreciate knowing if this is something I have a shot at with no tech sales experience and what I could expect for promotional opportunities and compensation.
Thanks for the help!

SaaS sales for 11 years here, many will hire out of industry but you will most likely start off in a SMB or current customer upselling role vs a major markets AE. I’d look for those types of opportunities. Highly recommend reaching out to current employees in those types of roles for companies you’re interested in via LinkedIn. Most are willing to help you out. Put in a few years and prove yourself in a SMB, inside sales, or current customer upsell role and the advancement opportunities will be there for movement into a major market AE. Good luck!
Get really good at prospecting, follow‑up, and using a CRM, and choose companies with real onboarding and coaching instead of “sink or swim.” You prevent washing out by focusing on consistent daily activity more than just the month‑end number. At least imo.
It honestly depends on the company. I have seen some sales roles that are super easy to land, and some that are more difficult. Best you can do is start applying and see what sticks.
