I was recently at a firm who had a few PhDs working there. They each had PhD on their business cards. It felt a bit tacky, but it could be just signaling to their clients. Thoughts?

PHD is fine. Cool actually.
MBA, MSc, etc? Loser.

likefunny

i think CFA is fine if you work at fidelity or somewhere doing wealth management. overkill for that kind of position though.

That’s just the standard way to show doctorate degrees. And it makes sense for that to be on their business card because part of what clients are buying is subject matter expertise, which a PhD makes clear.

If I had a PhD I would put that everywhere. And every appointment would be a “doctors appointment “ lol

When you spend 3-7 years focusing on a tiny area of a single topic, you can use those letters however and wherever you want in my eyes.

like

Bruh — if I had to go through the literal hell of getting a PhD I would get “PhD” inside a tear drop tattooed onto my face.

So yeah, putting it on your card isn’t pretentious at all.

likefunny

I don't have people call me doctor. It's in my email signature because my manager told to, which is fine with me. But absolutely it's in my business card. I don't understand why it wouldn't be.

like

Normal... people have MBA on their business cards/LinkedIn all the time, so why not a PhD?

like

MBA is ridiculous to me (and I have one), but PhD is fine

like

If having a PhD is a requirement for your job, then it makes sense to include it...but you shouldn’t insist on being called “Doctor.”

like

Rather facetiously, S&1, I’d like to point out that that’s probably why politics and law are so broken - no check on the system. However, most law schools have PhDs on faculty, most colleges have PhD based standards committees and most universities in which reputable law schools exist are run by PhD holders. Almost everyone has a phd’s signature on their diploma. One could argue, facetiously or not, if that’s why academia is so broken (and expensive).

Just like people with JDs, you’d put it there.

like

I’m actually surprised by the somewhat positive reaction to this. I actually have a PhD and never thought to put it on my business cards out of fear of coming off as a pretentious ass. I guess I was also kind of asking for myself. I may have to switch out my business cards.

like

MD - Agree concerning the value of PhD to a team but disagree that all PhDs provide it. Also I would include it in the one pager if that can be portrayed to the client or it’s known they will appreciate it. Just think business cards and signatures should be lean and only include credentials that are a directly required / actively recruited for that type of work otherwise it’s clutter. Have a great holiday!

Who has business cards these days?

Also, totally tacky. You really are that shallow that you need to flex at every opportunity?

If someone works for Research dept, they better display PhD. Dont want a bunch of dropouts running R&D

like

I have a Phd and I put that everywhere. Worked hard on that for years and years.

like

I honestly can’t think of any reason why I should care what they put on their business cards as long as they are not lying...

like

I have a PhD and I find it pretentious to put it on a business card. Yeah, I worked hard, but it was one of many ways to get the knowledge that I have. Also, I know people with PhDs who underperform at work: it's no measure of success in the workplace. My work speaks for itself, as does my professional reputation. It's on my resume and LinkedIn where it should be, but not on my business card. I'm not an academic.

like

It's a convention at your firm/industry, or it's not. My first job after I got my PhD, everyone called me doctor. I felt like that was pretentious and it made me uncomfortable. But then I realized I was the one making it weird: that was what people with PhDs got called there. If there isn't a set way of doing things, sure, you can pick. But when there is and you go against it, if people notice they won't necessarily read it the way you want them to, they might just think you don't get or like the organizational culture.

like

Makes sense if you work in academia. Otherwise, I don’t understand why someone in consulting would add those to a business card - unless your PhD is what you consult on...

like

If I worked years getting PhD and adding to the knowledge humans have I definitely would. I think things like mba are kind of pointless to have

like

It does not bother me. If they want to have PhD on their business card, so be it. I’m secure enough in myself to not worry or care too much about the small things.

My PhD is in the field that I am aligned to. PwC doesn’t let us put PhD on business cards (at least when I joined)

Hi 👋. I posted here a few weeks ago about being nervous conducting a PIP conversation with my team member.
I did it this week and let me just say it was the weirdest conversation ever. The guy is usually argumentative and tries to disprove every bit of feedback. But this time he just sat there and asked no questions and said nothing.
Maybe he’s looking for new jobs already - don’t mind this at all and this would be a good outcome for him overall.
