McKinsey & Company I did my final round with McKinsey today, and I I received a rejection call from the partner today. However, he said I did really great and wants to keep in touch with me. He also mentioned that I should reapply in 6 months. Does anyone have any similar experience? Do I have a better chance if I reapply next time?McKinsey & Company

OP, it’s definitely not a stupid thought. Haven’t been at McKinsey that long, but on several occasions have thought of going back to my T2 firm. Dont know your current tenure at BCG, but have heard several lateral hires say the transition isn’t easy in the first 2 years. Apparently if you make it past the first 2 years, you could outperform homegrown consultants. Hang in there!
Thanks McK1, yes have only been here 4 months. I know that’s not long and haven’t really given it much of an opportunity, but I left an amazing role and a pretty great opportunity on the table when I left and feel that I could do more and grow more in that role than I will here. I think the only thing keeping me here at the moment are money and brand and I’m not sure if that makes it worthwhile
I’m an MBB lateral, I’ve considered it slightly. I don’t think it’s stupid per se, you can always go to industry later. That being said, if you’re not really confident you’ll be on a smooth partner track it could be a waste of time. I would also say there’s a high degree of variance in hours and WLB across BCG teams, so you may have just gotten unlucky so far.
Yes I agree it’s a big risk to go in sub partner. I’ve asked for a timeline to partner but at the end of the day nothing is guaranteed. That is what makes the decision difficult, to keep stifled pay for another few years with no guaranteed return whereas I know I have room to grow at BCG with earning potential and industry would add significantly more pay right now also
Stick around a year or two, the boomerang back is better I think.
Hmmm well you need to confirm if T2 hours are actually better or if you’re looking at this through rose colored glasses. I don’t think the hours are materially better haha
S& ranges from 50-60 hrs/week
Indeed are the hours materially different? You’re high up so I can see it could differ, but everything I’ve heard points that MBB/T2 are the same (but T2 u work just as hard for less pay) while Big4 there is a more clear - work less hard for less pay tradeoff.
Not a stupid thought at all, you're just dealing with change which is normal.
I will say give it more time. Get a few projects with different teams (if possible) and thereafter reconsider the move.
