I work at a global asset mgmt firm that pays out bonuses in Jan every year. If I transfer to another team internally by the end of this year, would I still get a bonus- based on your industry experience at other major finance firms? I’d think I’ll be fine but in my previous two years, it was the MD of my group and my boss communicating bonus info to me - so not sure how this works. My current boss will also do my 2020 year end performance, not my new boss. TIA

From my experience, you should still get a bonus, and it will most likely come from your old team. However, if the bonus is discretionary, it is very possible that your old team will not give you the fair amount since you left the team, the mgr would rather distribute more of the bonus pool to those that will be working for him in 2021. Leaving around bonus time is always very risky, unless you can negotiate your bonus ahead of time. Something you should definitely discuss with your old and new mgr.

Good that he was honest with you. But yeah, people don’t usually disclose that they are looking or leaving until after bonus is paid.

Same situation for me last year. I was compensated.

Joined a company months ago in a new industry and was told to own the company enterprise roadmap. It’s a new pillar for the company (of 4). Since I’m new and lack industry experience, is it a fair ask that my boss or their boss should be able to articulate the vision for that? Or set objectives/goals? They reply with just “you own the roadmap” and quite frankly I feel like they don’t know what they’re doing (they both don’t have domain expertise either). Am I being set up for failure?
