I’m black and a fairly new partner at PwC. I totally see what you mean. I used to blame it on the numbers game i.e the laws of attrition. Given the small number of black associates hired, I figured that it was not surprising to see a tiny few make it through manager. But... I came to realize that the issue in our profession is deeper than that. It’s hard to project yourself through the “top” of the pyramid if you don’t see role models around. I can’t speak for the other big 4 but what Tim Ryan is doing at PwC is quite remarkable. On day 1, he asked two black partners to lead the advisory and tax practices. He challenged each line of services to sponsor, promote and provide equal opportunities to black staff. Being on the other side now, I came to realize that he really means what he preaches. However...none of this would be meaningful if as a community we do not better integrate the concept of resilience and emotional intelligence. If you’re the only black team member but also the only one who did not get invited to the Friday night get together...no firm policy or leadership message would address that. The hustle is just to make the firm yours, understand the levers and cultivate an acute sense of awareness. Some of you will say that it must be tiring...but let’s be honest folks, as sad as it sounds, when have things been easy for us?
I'm Latino (hope it's okay to post here, but our bowl is dead!), but I feel you. I hear the talk, but looking around minorities are few and far between in office/regional leadership.
Same situation in my office. Part of me wonders if it’s because we, as minorities, don’t think it’s worth it to make partner. For me the idea of working and being on-call 24/7 isn’t worth any amount of money. Family and relationships matter more, but that’s harder to maintain in PA the higher you rise in level
Diversity sounds nice but they don’t really care
Its a normal sentiment. I personally do not find it worth the effort to be partner, especially after all of the hurdles to get to director. Its a very tough road and there aren’t many of us to begin with but if seeing us is important to you, strive to be what you want to see
Same! 🙁 I am a senior so I’m thankful I’ve been able to make it that far. However, in my office there are a handful of minorities in senior positions but I have not seen ONE manager that is African American, but there a few Hispanic and Chinese. Office is predominantly Caucasian which I have no issue with I just wish it was a little more diverse.
