ID Associates…how the hell do you reach your billable requirements? Just started at an ID firm and am lost as to how it’s possible when there is so much daily grind type work that you cannot bill for. Someone enlighten me.

I have a question about mid-size Philadelphia firms. Does anyone have any insight about what life is like (culture, pay, billable hours, cases, WFH, perks, etc.) as a junior partner/senior associate/of counsel in the litigation department at the following firms: Montgomery McCracken, Schnader Harrison, Stradley Ronon, Dilworth Paxson, Klehr Harrison?

I'm a staff in a specialty s&t group and have to beg for work because they say work volume isn't as high as prior years. I'm also harped on for my billable hours being low. Honestly very sick of it and miss always having something to do in audit. What should I do? I've only been here for a few months.

So I have completely lost interest in my area of practice mainly because I haven’t been exposed to many matters (our team is really slow) and I am the most junior in the team. So billable work is never constant. I feel like this has impacted my interest and stagnated my growth. I am thinking of moving into a different area of practice that I’m interested in. Has anyone ever done this? I’m actually depressed and I really hate being given work now. I have ADHD. Please advise

What are firm’s known billable requirements? Is there a ramp up period?

I moved cities and my company is giving me 12% decrease in my salary. My current salary is within my new cities range, and I am definitely not paid market rate to begin with…also for context I have always been a high performer, have many relevant certifications, and am involved with initiatives outside my billable work

I’m not interested in accepting a decrease this large. What happens if you don’t accept it? Do you see if they come back with something more reasonable or will they fire you?

I am a 10 yr lawyer. 7 yrs in my practice area. Little over a year at current firm. Still an associate. Im at large plaintiff firm w/ billable requirements. I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.

Big decision to make. I’ve busted my ass at a big law defense firm for 4 1/2 years, and have been promised a partnership in October (constantly working Weekends, billing 220 hours per month). I have a 3 month old and would like to see her grow up. The shareholder has consistently promised that “help is on the way,” but it comes in new first year Associates that I train up (and love mentoring them to do so), but inevitably after 1-2 years, they leave. I’m drained and fed up, what to do?

Dumb substantive question. I’ve become my family’s law encyclopedia when legal things happen (as we all do), and I’ve been answering lots of questions about rittenhouse. I was explaining the absoluteness of double jeopardy, and my sister asked me a weird question. If the defense bribed the jury (pure hypo, no ones alleging it happened) to get an acquittal, and jury returned a NG verdict, is that also absolute and unreviewable?

How do you handle it when it takes several hours to complete something that should have taken far less because you went down research rabbit holes that were ultimately fruitless, rewrote the same thing a dozen times to get it "right", or generally let the wheels spin too long? It took me nearly 4 hours to write an email to a client's question yesterday that certainly didn't reflect the time spent drafting it. Do I bill the whole time? Self-edit time down? Bill it and note to Partner to cut?

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??
