If you were laid off in the last year, how long did your job hunt take from start to finish? I'm trying to get people who are affected by tech layoffs an idea on how long to expect before getting a new job and set realistic expectations.

It took me 5 weeks. Good luck buddy. Just do your best. Don’t base what gonna happen with you off of others failures or successes.

9 months, although I didn't put much effort in the first 1-2 months as a break was needed. Many hours spent in LinkedIn with nothing to show for it. In the end, it was through connections and contacts that I found my job.

2 years

Was laid off in April and about to start my new position late July, applied for over 60 roles and only 4 interviews

I am still on my job hunt. 11 months in

Does everyone tailor their resume to the jobs they applied? or the folks who now got hired, did you tailor your resume?

Laid off 2 years ago and took about 6 months to get new job but now laid off again. 3 months in with no leads yet, feels harder then last time this time round. I was consistently getting interviews 2 years ago but now just ghosted. Very discouraging that the job hunting is taking longer and the period of employment is becoming shorter before getting laid off again.

Laid off in April, spent a month on lawyers fighting for severance. took the first offer after about four months of applications. infinitely better com, but half the money

Started job hunting in March, made redundant in July (was anticipating it might be a risk and I was right) timing was immaculate - received an offer 2 days after redundancy was confirmed 👌🏻 and a second offer the following week. Those job-hunting months - though not long - felt hellish. Getting in the line-up at all, and then being turned down for some pretty tenuous reasons that felt like thinly veiled ageism and sexism. It’s tough out there, I’m rooting for everyone in the same situation

I was out of work for 19 months, but found a job 3 weeks ago. I had to use my previous experience as a manufacturing engineer to land a job, my software and Salesforce experience was getting me no where.

Almost 2 years now, i am still searching for a position related to my experience as telecommunication engineer (4 years), i also search for a position in my study field, or in networks in general, there are obstacles, but i still get some responses and interviews from time to time, i would say in every 10 applications i get one response, but the competition is fierce out there.

I was laid off mid-2024. About 14 months later, I worked on a contract that ran out of budget after 7 months. I'm about 4 months into my second round of hunting. Pretty sure there is no "finish" anymore.

I was laid off two years ago in March 2024 and I am still looking.

Laid off in Jan 2025, started actively looking and applying by May 2025. Have still been looking since then til now. Have gotten a fair amount of interviews but no offer yet.

Month 7. Receiving rejection letters feels like a win at this point. Im ghosted mostly.

it took me about a month… I sprayed my resume out to all the usual resume farms like Monster, Indeed, cleared. connections, etc. I updated LinkedIn with all my latest projects. I applied to jobs at the rate of 30-40 per day using tailored cover letters and tailored resumes. I phone interviewed with 5 potential companies. I went back to the fourth one and signed the job offer in on week.

It’s been almost 5 months for me. I feel like I’ve tried everything except going for entry level jobs. It feels like it’s not a good idea and I should keep trying to find something that interests me and matches my recent experience but part of me feels it’s a waste of time and I should just get a tech support job to start again and gain domain expertise perhaps in a very different industry.

I was laid off last summer and am still actively looking for a job in tech. I have about 400+ applications, have had maybe a handful of interviews, and I had to take a part time job at a grocery store to pay my bills once my unemployment ran out. I have written dozens of cover letters tailored to each job, and my resume changes multiple times a day. It's hard out here, but keep pushing.

5 months of active search. Had to take a 5% pay cut to get where I am at with more work.

I was let go at the end of February and started my new job on June 15th so just under 4 months. Fortunately my new role is very similar to my last but did require relocating as it is hybrid whereas my last role was fully remote.

it took me 5 months to find a new one.

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

About rolling off my project with no new project opportunity yet. I’m already getting anxious and can’t have a full night rest with the worry of not finding a project soon and eventually getting laid off. Also over 90% chargeability and great reviews, but seems like that may not matter with the recent layoff stories I’ve read....

What is a good interview answer for leaving a job after a few months when the real reason is that you’re sleeping with one eye open in hopes of not being on the chopping block after two rounds of massive layoffs? Company culture is at an all-time low, and it will only go down from here from what I’ve seen in the short months I’ve been there.

Career advice?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.

Any opinions/tips?

Asking advice from a recruiter: I’ve been recently laid off :( This week I took some time to reflect, talk to friends and family. I want to be more thoughtful on my next move and although interviewing right away would be logical I feel I want to take a break and some time for myself. Take a month or two off working and use that time to plan thoughtfully on my next move. Would having that gap in my resume be an issue when I go back to the job market?
