You have to be employed until it vests. Any money you put in is yours - but you’ll lose matching funds.
If you’ve got a year or less until it vests - stay
If you’re not vested you don’t keep the match.
If the match isn’t great move on. Most matches are pretty low these days.
The money you invested is yours. The matches aren’t (depending on your company’s policy about % you keep based on length of service - omnicom used to be 50% after 3 years). If you move within the holding company your 401k is not affected and you’re still working towards your vesting within that company. If you leave the holding company the account will likely stay active but you can’t contribute. It just does its thing until you are of retirement age or roll it over somewhere new.
