I don’t know your circumstances, however, YOU ARE NOT DUMB. You’ll learn from this and rise above once again!
You are not dumb, or not good at your job. See this as a growing experience and you will find your “home”’. Lots of people have been fired for a variety of reasons, so you are not alone. Don’t lose faith/confidence in yourself. It’s just matter of time to find the place that will match your skill set and vibe. Good luck on your search. As they say, when one door closes, another one opens!
So many things have to align for any job to work out. It’s not all on you. Take stock of what you learned and move on. One job, especially first job, does not define a career.
Why are you getting fired vs laid off?
I’ve been fired, and it sucks. And it super sucks to be fired right before the end of the year, during the holidays and shit. Remember that you’re not dumb, you’re totally capable of turning this into a learning experience, one that’s probably going to help you land your next job at your new place. As long as you learn and move on, your next gig is just a matter of time 🤘
I got fired from my first PR and comms job almost 10 years ago, went into my 30th unemployed and feeling like shit. I have landed some great gigs since that allowed me to live and work in 4 different countries and I’m now heading comms at a tech scale-up. After having switched offices and co-workers many times, I can tell you that this is not reflective of your skills (or not just - and it’s good to be self reflective about where you might have gaps and fill these) but more than anything of whether it not you fit culturally. And you have to remind yourself that culture fit goes both ways! Maybe this was not the right workplace for you ...rather than you not fitting to them. This is a good opportunity to identify what’s important for you in a workplace :) It sucks now but you’ll be fine!
You'll drive yourself insane thinking about what other people your age are doing. Don't do that. Focus on fixing whatever got you fired and finding your next role.
I’ve been fired a few times, it usually means you’re just at odds with where you are, I’ve always come out the better for it. Trust you know what you’re doing, because I’m sure you do, take a couple day to be angry, because you’ll need to, then get back at it and start looking for your next gig.
I’ve been fired twice. Some gigs just aren’t a good fit. Both times I was fired, I ended up getting a new gig that was way better than the old. BTW - You should still try to get unemployment - they say you can’t get it for being fired but that’s not always the case if you have a decent side to the story.
I got fired from my first job as an ae in at an entertainment agency. It’s hard to go out into the world of work when you don’t even know your strengths and skill sets - think of this as a learning process. Tbh it was a bad fit - I’m not detail oriented and messed up a lot. But several years later I realized strategy is my thing - big picture thinking, researching etc. I’ve been killing it ever since
I’d look into all the content out there about how to break in as a junior strategists - if you go digging there is tons. Julian Cole’s academy is a good starting point
People shouldnt be fired around holidays. After holidays is fine as no one wants to face january anyway
Been laid off a bunch of times and, while it stinks, it’s often an opportunity in disguise. In short, you can be defined by your circumstances or you can rise above them.
I got fired from my first ‘real’ job. It’s not fun but don’t stress. The road ahead is long and people won’t care when you’re in mid career that you got fired.
Go read about all the famous people who were fired from their first jobs. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Sometimes getting fired is the universe shoving you into the right career path because you started out in the wrong one. Take this time to figure out what wasn’t working and what your REAL strengths are.
