Nothing wrong with wanting to be an individual contributor. Not everyone is meant to be a people manager and I wish company’s didn’t force the role on those unwilling or unfit for the responsibility. I think a lot of employees would be better off and outcomes would be more positive if people management was more thought out.
The reward for being a great welder is becoming a foreman — a role where you’ll no longer do the thing you’re great at.
On the other hand, I don’t think people respect managers that can’t actually do the tasks they manage others to do.
As someone who just wants to figuratively weld (actually to art direct), I needed to to become a CD in order to advance financially.
And since management isn’t something I innately enjoy, I really earn that extra pay.

Be the manager you wish you had.
Ha, your direct reports will hate you, too. It's human, though. Managing is rough. I learned from all my "terrible" managers, so it prepared me for what I have to face today. Your direct reports will never get it until they become managers, and so the cycle goes.
Pay is good enough for me to not care about them being ungrateful. I'm one of the managers who can actually do their job.
I would say that all your terrible managers are good experiences to show you what not to do, but I think I learned more from my amazing managers how to be what a manager should.
What about the great managers you’ve had, the ones you were willing to follow through the 🔥 fire (but who never required you to) because they are sooooo awesome? That’s the thing—the gift of inspiration and beautiful example. Never had one of those managers, check out leadership thinkers out there, some good ones to read up on.
How about turn the tide and do it BETTER than every horrible manager you ever had? A true creative opportunity and challenge!
We don’t have enough of the greats, plenty of fertile ground to make a HUGE difference! If you’ve ever been “put in your place” by a manager, scapegoated, ignored and failed to be advocated for by a manager who doesn’t get how to treat people in your discipline, recall all the details.
Being a people manager is mostly about common sense, having character and integrity, and caring about your direct reports. It’s a work relationship where you have the upper hand and choose to support vs abuse.
It’s true, some prefer to keep creating, no desire to manage, so don’t go that route—I think this is where most bad managers get their start.
Any interest at all in people managing, go for it.
Be the manager you wish you had all those times you hated yours.
