I’m considering leaving my firm and becoming an adjuster. It’s essentially in house work, PTO, benefits, no billable hours. I know of a couple companies that hire attorneys to adjust claims and I’m sure there are more. Has anyone made this transition or know of someone who has and can comment on how it went? Very early stages of considering this so all comments/thoughts/opinions are welcome.

I’m a 1st year associate who was an adjuster before becoming an attorney. I work in ID. Leaving that job and going to law school was perhaps the worst decision of my life.

I make roughly the same as a my former counterparts do (they are now of course in more senior roles), but I work twice as hard and now have debt.

like

I know people who've gone the other direction which has been helpful for them
The only attorney I know who went from practicing to adjuster was because they got disbarred. Aside from a significant pay cut I imagine it would prevent you from returning to practice law again in a y serious place.

Why not consider an in house defense attorney position? Most of the major carriers have in house so you get to keep being an attorney with a lot less pressure.

like

OP you could also consider working as coverage counsel, in a corporate discovery unit or in compliance.

Wouldn’t that be a substantial pay decrease if you’re currently a partner?

like

The pay cut, depending on your current situation and where you go to adjust claims may not be so drastic when you consider WLB value and benefits (health insurnace, 401k, bonuses etc.). The case volume is high but it’s low pressure compared to actually litigating the cases and billing!

Some of my more difficult adjusters have been JDs or former lawyers in other states. I haven’t enjoyed working with some when they become blind to the weaknesses of a case or jurisdiction. Just don’t be one of those 😜

like

I’m really confused by this. I thought adjusters make like $60-80k max and with insurance defense it’s reasonable to expect a salary down the road of $200-$400 if you make partner and have a decent book of business?

like

Adjusters on complex cases are usually more senior, they can make anywhere from $100k–$180k, depending on the type of cases. Yes, that is less that a partner at a law firm, but they also have a sold 40h work week, no billables, and considerably less stress because (once you reach that level) you are the primary decision maker when it comes to case management.

Remember, there is a title higher than Partner in a law firm: “client”

Hi,
Is there any relocation benefits in
SLK ?
I have to move from gurgaon to bangalore.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

I went to a T14 law school, got great grades and glowing recommendations, and wrote (what I thought was) a great writing sample. But I got rejected from all 70 federal clerkships I applied to. The only thing I can think of is: I took a non traditional route after law school and did a 2 year public interest fellowship in a niche field of administrative law. The rejection gave me a lot of self hatred. I still really want to clerk. Any advice? What is wrong with me? I feel like a failure.

I'm accepting an offer with a new company... Start in early Aug. Senior Manager role, though in this company that equates to Manager at most consulting farms. They did not had hunt me. I came to them for the job.

I have COVID delayed vacations planned for the last week in August and the first week in October.

Should I just cancel one of them? Or should I at least put both on the table and see what they say? They're going to hire me either way, but I wonder if it's a bad start to ask for both.

What is one thing you found unbelievable/surprising after you became a senior counsel/partner?

It’s Friday night at midnight and I just got out of work. I am new to FPP defense. So far it’s soul crushing. I feel like a robot just doing the same pattern pleadings and discovery over and over. If I try to be creative or ask questions I get the response that I should not recreate the wheel… basically just cut and paste. My brain feels like it’s going to rot doing this work. Does it get better or do I need to plan my exit to a different field ASAP?
