I’m considering taking a 100% remote position. I’ve never worked from home regularly before. Any advice for not getting distracted or staying social? Is it challenging or easy to get used to?

I currently work 100% remotely and I wouldn’t have taken the job if I knew I would end up being remote. We started off with an office and decided to close it to save money on rent. It’s admittedly nicer to not have to drive to work or to always have food/snacks/everything nearby.

However, it really has killed my motivation. It’s harder to separate work from home life since I’m always home so I’ve found myself getting more easily frustrated with everything since I can’t get the same mental breaks as I did when I would previously go home for the day.

You also end up losing out on picking up information you’d get by being in an office. When you’re in the office, you end up B.S.ing with people and learning things here and there like what’s new with certain accounts or office happenings and whatnot. You end up only getting information about the stuff you’re working on.

It’s also less rewarding. In an office, you can get instant gratification when you show someone a deck or something. You can get instant feedback or clarification or a pat on the back. You don’t really get the same from working remotely. It’s a bit daunting to ask for more clarification because sending someone an email or calling them feels like an inconvenience. So you end up having to make assumptions or inferences.

Losing out on the instant feedback, not physically seeing people, and overall not feeling like a part of a community has kind of killed this for me. I try really hard to feel more invested and motivated but it’s a lot harder than when I was in an office and didn’t live in a bubble

I also worked remote for a year and it was awful. Also, you lose valuable time making friends and connections who you’ll need in your next gig. Seriously consider if this is right...

I’ve done an extended remote position and the freedom was amazing A few things to consider: are key teams/who you’re reporting into easily accessible? What are the means of communications? Will it be challenging to get things done/moving work along if you’re not there in person?

If you establish times to be entirely available/online, and set aside break/hard stop times, you’ll get into a good flow. Sometimes the hardest thing is needing to be on call at a moment’s notice and not allotting time to walk away.

My partner worked remotely for a long time as well, and as a serious extrovert, really needed social interaction. He found the best way to feel less cooped up, was to switch up his work environment to public spaces, and to set up lunches with ex coworkers/friends.

Best of luck!

I’ve worked full time remote since 2016, part time since 2009. I’ve ended up renting my own office space to have a place I can go to focus. I use Freedom to shut down distractions and frequent calls/chats/emails to keep up on office news. I also have in-person meetings once a month. I find that remote work gives me the illusion of control over my schedule, while changing up where I work is useful for focus. I wouldn’t go back to an office every day unless I had to.

I’m freelancing, did my first major stint of remote full time recently and was surprised how much i liked it. Easy connectivity makes virtual collaboration feel like the real thing. And u get pretty used to ur commute lasting the time it takes u to close ur laptop.

Was kinda dreading it when it began, then dreaded the commute to the next office when it was over. It’s def something a guy could get used to.

Working remote is not for everyone but I 100% love it. Tips get a nice pace. Put an alarm clock and decide what time you start working everyday To socialize go have lunch with your friends at their office / work in a shared office or coffee shop. It’s super easy for me. I have a disability so working from home is a huge relief.

Tried it for a year and it just wasn’t for me - although having gone back to on-site I do miss the freedom I’ve had to do the laundry and pick up the kids :). No question I am way more productive in the office - both those spontaneous interactions and the clear “work” delineation.

I’m pretty torn on whether I want to take an offer for an internal role or not…
The job itself sounds pretty interesting. Lots of opportunity for growth (eventually will build out a team).

My only concern is the hiring manager. I talked to someone in my network who has worked with him in the past and she told me that she would 100% work with him again bc she learned a lot, but that he has a very dominant personality and that some ppl can butt heads with him.

Trying to give this company a chance but see an opportunity at PWC I think I would be a great fit for. Any advice?

How does contract to hire work? If I’m offered $37/hr on w2 for 3 months and then possibly a permanent position, how much can I expect to get annually as a full time company employee as a BI data analyst II? I have a M.S. and certificates in DA but this will be my first job as DA.
I prefer working for what is offered on contract without negotiating, and then negotiate when I transition into the company itself so I have a better chance of getting the contract position and show my skills.

Hey fishes, recently got an offer of 245k plus a bonus, but no specificity and at least 3% cost of living annual raise. My current job I make 150k plus a 20% bonus and an annual cost of living raise anywhere from 2-3.5%. Have been in my current position about a year. Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

I have a in person(online, 4 hours - 4 people) technical interview coming up and I have been practicing my coding for the past 3 weeks. The only thought I've been having is "what if I can't solve the coding question?" I am still fairly new to the software engineer scene and the position is for a level 1 software engineer.
Does it essentially end my chances if at any point I can't solve the question? I mean I will definitely attempt to talk it through, ask question, but no progress in code. 🤷

Can someone explain how billable hours work? At a new agency and although I had to fill timesheets at my previous agencies, they were mainly used to ensure we weren’t over servicing a client/for setting the appropriate retainer for contract renewals. I asked ppl at my agency but haven’t gotten a proper explanation. I get the impression that billing to the agency admin code isn’t recommended, and my manager said he bills everything to client codes, but that doesn’t make sense to me .
