Though I’m grateful they got back to me, very annoyed that they interviewed externally if they were going to go with an internal hire. Why do they even bother to interview external candidates?

This year has been insane. 200+ hours every month. July has been really been slow though. I’m at like 35 billable hours this month. From what I’ve observed, firms could retain associates without matching just by instituting some sort of mandatory vacation. No point in more money if you don’t have time to spend it.

It could even be scheduled in advance at the beginning of the year and based on seniority but firms would just have to take its implementation seriously and not contact you during your time off. Imagine having a mandatory week off every six months.

Anyone agree that 6th year in biglaw is so strange! Everyone starts asking/expecting you to know whether you’re in it for the long haul and things feel kinda competitive. Meanwhile, I’m still just trying take home my salary while putting in as few hours as possible without getting fired lol

Are associates who receive high salary bumps also billing at higher hourly rates? If yes, how are clients handling the rate increases? I have to imagine firms plan to pass these costs on the clients but that will be a tough sell at my company (F100). Maybe we start moving our work more aggressively to smaller firm where possible?

A firm approached me with an offer because I had worked with some partners who recently joined. They said it’s not really a “practice” of the firm to guarantee the bonus and that they want to properly incentivize people to hit hours… but I now have data from current associates and ones who had offers (including recently this past month) who received guarantees — nothing exceptional about their circumstances either.

How do I respectfully present that data in a counteroffer?
