I'm supposed to have a 30-day notice period before leaving my position. I absolutely do not want to stay another month and my new role is in an entirely new industry. Has anyone ever managed to get out of it? Are there any serious repercussions if I just don't do it?

Depends where you are. I don’t think there’s a legal requirement in any of the states

like

I’ve heard they’re easy to break but I’m guessing a month might not be worth it since you might need a lawyer involved. Just hearsay so you’ll want more opinions here, haha.

like

I need to get out of a three month notice period.

Thank you! I am quite burnt out as well, this place is non-functional.

I wouldn’t want to live where you live, laws like that are beyond toxic. Just give your 30-day notice and give the lowest effort possible

like

This is the correct advice. 30 day notice and bare minimum to transition work. If your boss is unsatisfied with this, he can expedite your exit.

helpful

Where do you live/work? I'm no attorney, so I can't speak to the legality, but why would any employer want someone to work for them who doesn't want to be there? Why wouldn't they consider how toxic an unhappy, departing employee can be for both clients and other employees?

like

Legally they can’t hold you to it.

Resigning employees are obligated to give a 30-day notice for their employees before they leave. This is not a requirement from the employers or a courtesy from the employees. The law itself obligates employees to stay for a period of 30 days before the last day.

What law are you referring to?

What state are you in?

Not sure there is legally anything thing they can do unless there is a contract or something that states you must give the notice. Most is just common courtesy.

Well, if you don't give a 30 day notice, what will they do just fire you? It's not worth your mental health. If you want to go you should

Bonuses are generally based on past performance and this are considered earned income. Clawing back earned income for anything other than fraud is pretty indefensible legally unless it is specifically detailed in the employment contract. Even then, it would be difficult to defend.

I'd recommend giving them the thirty day notice to stay in good graces. Especially with starting completely over in a new industry. You never know if you need even a recommendation.

I'm seriously contemplating taking a software development boot camp to make a career change. For those who hire new software developers, does it make you stand out if you get your certificate from a university instead of a coding academy (like coding dojo or something)? I noticed the universities are a bit more expensive but is it worth the price to have a university on your resume or does it not really matter?
