It depends on your goals. If you're using it as a launchpad, to pay down debt, gain experience, or open doors—it can be worth it for a few years. But staying long-term? Only if the lifestyle genuinely works for you.
I left and ultimately came back about a decade later. Big law is a great place to learn how to be a good lawyer. I came back because the work is more challenging and fast paced than in house (and the money is great). It was never about prestige for me.
I make more than double what I did in house. The most challenging thing about coming back has been building a book. That’s much harder to do from scratch, which is why I came back as counsel.
Hi...Yes you are in a very tough job where you have to really take care of yourself (sleep, massages, exercise, meditation...etc.) Money is nice but the grind day in day out... you can always get into less stressful areas of law. Trust and estates... compliance. Realize earning the big money takes years of being trained at work... putting in the time. You don't walk into it. But you have to figure out what works for you.
I feel like more solid advice will be given in the Biglaw bowl.
You know the old saying: no one ever said on their deathbed, I wish I’d spent more time in the office
Nope, not one bit
It’s not easy and it’s a personal decision based on how much money you want or need to make, as well as lifestyle. By yesr five, I knew I needed out. Be careful where you jump, however, as some in-house jobs will suck the life out of you without the same pay as Big Law. Best of luck out there!
