Coach
Your coworkers didn’t get simply promoted because they buddied up to the right execs. It absolutely helps to get visibility with leadership, but there are some critical things that help:
1. Showing ambition - no one just gets tapped for promotion without letting people know they want it. You won’t get a job you don’t apply for, neither will you be promoted just cos you’re good at your job. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.
2. They were good at the things that mattered - it’s great to nail your KPIs but the soft skills around that, the ability to prioritize and make sure you get the right things done at the right time goes a long way.
3. They went the extra mile - I don’t mean they did 60 hours a week while you were only doing 50, it means stopping a moment to ask why something matters, and by understanding why, they were able to deliver better results. Or recognizing that the literal ask wouldn’t deliver the needed results - so aiming slightly to the left got better results.
And finally - be like able. That helps too.
Oh honey…
I can't recall any situation where a group of people are involved that doesn't have a political undercurrent. From the grade school playground to leisure/social clubs to team sports to the workplaces we must navigate. All have a degree of politics. Somehow politics became synonymous with popularity contests and the result sits in The House of Commons fighting, name calling, and making a ruckus that would embarrass a grade 4 class. If one doesn't acknowledge the humanncondition that in part drives people into groups of like individuals the result will be dysfunctional and toxic. A condition that limits productivity, creativity, collaboration, cooperation, and ultimately restricts the life blood of any company. Profit.
We all learn to play the game, grasshopper. It's all part of the fun and games. Brown nose or bust.
The phrase office politics can refer to any number of scenarios. At worst it's Machiavellian intrigue and backstabbing. But in its benign form it's just being personable with coworkers. Being known to upper management, and being personable, will certainly help someone. That's just a basic fact. People tend to promote people they like, and if you avoid being personable, you're just undermining yourself.
Here is my take for what it's worth. Playing politics will take you only so far. If all you have is relationships and you have your play sides you have to hope you end up on the right side.
Leadership this way is a fickle beast.
There is another way.
If you build your career on actual skills and expertise you may not rise as fast, but you will have more freedom (as people will look for you for your ability to get things done therefore have the ability to say no), and you likely will have a longer career.
In the end, unless you own the business you will always be an employee.
Most "Leadership" talk is nothing more than smoke and mirrors . Heck, depending on the area but practitioners can have way more rewarding careers (in terms of comp) than "leaders".
Oh honey it goes deeper than politics, likability etc.. you can check all boxes and still be snubbed just coz you might threaten them when you rise in power.. Empathetic ppl will never make it to top.. it’s about being cut throat in million ways.. focus on what matters to you.. what brings you joy at the end of the day.. climbing ladder doesn’t always signify someone is better than you
No for real.. he shouted quite part on top of his lungs and ppl think he is Jesus reincarnated.. That ish needs to be studied.. like the progress in humanity feels like hoax.. deep down ppl never wanted equality
...and once your time comes to be in the Leadership Chair...You will be playing politics... because everyone wants to feel important....
Politics is a large part of it - but you’re framing it incorrectly. Learn how to navigate culture.
It’s a combination. That’s why we learn in school not only how to do things, but how to make friends and work well with others. That carries into all facets of life.
It depends on the organization. It is systemic. If you already have mediocre or incompetent leaders, there is a likelihood they will hire or promote the same. Especially in more established, public companies. Over the last year we have hired a large number of Sr. to Exec leaders in Digital and they brought in their own people from previous orgs. No one within KF was given the opportunity to fill those newly created roles. Leaders, at least here, don't really allow any decision making outside of their own close circle so they don't see any diversity of thought therefore things don't change.
