Is the economy doomed? My stock portfolio and 401k certainly doesn’t stand out like it did 1-2 years back.

Lol I'm guessing you're like 25? No the economy is not doomed because stocks are a little red. It's a great time to keep buying on sale.

It's not normal to be going up as much as we have these last 5 years, but regardless the market will bounce back.

likesmartfunny

No idea what you mean by stand out. The market probably down a little from where it was a year ago and certainly higher than it was 2 years ago

like

Embrace the red - buy up as much as you can right now. Stocks are on sale

likesmart

Unless you are retiring soon, dw about it. In 5 years from now, your money will have grown. Even if you are completely red currently.

Yes. Likely this is the end of civilization

If your portfolio is down from where it was 1-2 years ago then your portfolio is not properly diversified.

Look at the history of the stock market. Some years it’s up, some years it’s down. But over long periods of time (10 years) it’s always up. Don’t worry about it and keep contributing.

like

Your initial investment may have taken 10 years to get back to even but you made a lot on the shares you bought during those 10 years. Also don’t pick stocks and invest in the market if you want to avoid the risk of a single company.

This might not be a buying the dip opportunity yet but the market pointing to a collapse. Fundamentally there’s no positive catalyst so far, technically market is making higher lows to lower highs. The macro economics right now is very different from previous 13 years. Bond market is closer to a collapse than the stock market and that’s much more concerning, our debt is above 30T right now. FED won’t bail the market again, until at least inflation gets controlled, that means for the next 2 years, it also means that if market crashes right now, zombie companies will go bankrupt and market might be stuck for may be a decade until it gets to growth again. So if you are investing right now make sure you account that it might take a few years to get significant returns and that if the market sinks under 375 at SPX, and 30k dow, have an exit plan, or be ready to ride it out. Let’s see what JP will bring us this week. Good luck.

Probability of recession (stagflation) is high. But just like every other crash or dip in the past, it will come back.

2009 looked like a horror show. 2012 through 2019 looked pretty good. Same with every other recession or depression.

If you are concerned, which is valid, make sure you don't have too much debt and have enough emergency savings.

like

I don't know why everyone is complaining. Is it because last 10 years all you had to do is pick a ticker and it made money and now you have to think for a minute to make money? There are so many deals to be had. Look where you are in the economic cycle and buy accordingly. Otherwise keeping DCAing into your index fund and close your eyes for the next 3 years. You are welcome.

like

Buy energy or commodities and chill. Look at CNQ and OXY...they are printing money. Want more risk and reward, look at MEG, VET, other Canadian oil names.

We have been on a strong bull run over the past decade and these couple years have been fluctuating due to major events. I would easily imagine a return to the levels we had last year, could take a year or two to get back there and then will exceed it.
Keep calm and hold on

A recession indicates 20-30% down from its highs. Just because the market doesn’t continue to climb does not mean the “economy” is doomed. It means that we could be entering a recession just like any other time we’ve seen over the past 40 years

Unrealized Gains/losses
It’s a veritable farmers market out there!

Hello I just started my first job (I’m 22) and I need to set up a 401k for matching with my company. I’m really confused how this works because I want to try to hit the IRS maximum of $19,500 for Roth contributions this year. Maybe it’s too late in the year now, but it’s asking me to pick my desired contribution % per pay period, but I’m not sure how much to do because it says it’ll kick in 1-2 pay cycles and I don’t even know when the next pay check comes yet. Any tips would be great

Hi all. I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder type 2 and it’s been hard to heal with the ups and downs of a very competitive sales position in the current market. Before taking FMLA for 12 weeks I was a top performer. Any advice from those that also live with bipolar disorder, or advice on a potentially a less stressful position to ease out of sales? I have 7 years healthcare sales and 1.5 years as a MLO.
