For what it’s worth, Fordham is an excellent school.
If you were top of the class at either, I doubt there would be any hesitation from a Big 4 due to Dartmouth Vs Fordham…
Both are great options. If I was you, I would take the scholarship. Your success will largely come from your work ethic, and networking.
Take the scholarship
Hi thank you for responding. Do you work on banking or consulting?
Look at the placements at each school - it’s a big financial / opportunity cost to forgo but if fordham’s placements are poor there is your answer. More likely than not, you can get a consultant gig just comes down to whether it’s t3 / t2
Fordham is a great school, take the scholarship, do well, and you’ll be just fine.
There’s a lot to be said about a free education and not having to take on debt. That being said, Dartmouth will make recruiting so much easier if you want to work for a brandname firm in consulting or banking. I don’t really know how Fordham places it’s MBAs generally, but I’m sure it would be fine for big 4
Ultimately depends on your appetite for having debt and your personal financial situation. Need to couple this with the potential for success from each program. By the way, no1 cares about top of the class out of your MBA, its not really an “academic” degree. It’s a career reset or career amplifier degree, networking and crushing interviews in your first 6-8 months is what matters.
Hypothetical for you: you graduate from Tuck with significant debt and a B4 post-MBA role or you graduate from Fordham with no debt and the same role?
Hiring out of bschool right now isn’t great, MBB has reduced class sizes and pushed back start dates since Covid. IB might have more spots since its a revolving door and a bunch of people want to leave after bad bonuses.
All the above to say is that Tuck is hands down the better option but do you want to be in MBB post-MBA feeling the pressure of having to pay down $200k in debt?
During my time at Fordham, I was able to intern & network - and ultimately end up - in the same spaces as “higher ranked” schools. The Gabelli / Fordham brand matters, especially in NYC where the alum network is strong. Post-grad placements are also solid. My peers were “gritty” & determined, habits I picked up on, and I still call up my old professors from time to time.
College is what you make it, and name isn’t the only factor which goes into recruiting. This is all part of the larger, more holistic puzzle of building your personal brand (which you should focus on anyway, regardless of the school you pick.) Go for the scholarship!
MBB or IB would be significantly harder at Fordham but if B4 consulting is your primary focus then probably fine.
