In the same boat. 25 years in and I’m still kicking myself for staying in. It’s nowhere near the same business it was when I started.
I’ve been fortunate enough to rise in the ranks, but the higher you go, the more detached from the work you become. And without any major awards, I’m just wondering when my neck is on the chopping block. Where do I go after that? All of the agencies are relatively the same in how they operate and what they’re looking for.
As far as passion goes, mine has been dwindling in the last few years. I try to hold on to some of the things I do enjoy. Production is a lot of fun. Even if the work is kinda meh. Some of the people we get to work with are honestly good human beings. And it beats the proverbial “digging ditches”.
Hang on as best as you can. We all need a paycheck regardless of how much we love or hate this.

I’m right there with you. My peers from college and previous are way ahead of me in title and acclaim, and I wonder what I did wrong. Career progression can be a crapshoot sometimes.
It’s okay to not LOVE the work all the time. There’s always a to-do about people having passion and drive and an intrinsic motivation to make the ✨best✨ advertising, and not everyone can lean into that. It’s totally fine to not be excited by this (it’s just a job at the end of the day), but I hope there’s other stuff that gets you hyped up and happy.

I have kinda had the same, and but I have also taken long breaks to travel, and worked abroad. Now I freelance. I feel fulltime is kinda too stressful you are expected to give up your life for the sake of “good ads” I also kinda realized I need to work on brands I like and things I enjoy otherwise I am totally miserable. In addition I also found that I don’t enjoy corporate setting or culture so being at the agency the whole day is not my thing. I do love production, being out and about, and I do love still photography and shooting video… but have to yet figure out how to make money with either of them. The cool thing about advertising is it pays well and fast…that one reason to stay at least freelance/part time…
