I've spent years crafting the perfect accounting resume. It's packed with buzzwords like "GAAP compliance," "financial statement preparation," and "audit procedures." But now that I'm eyeing roles outside of accounting, I'm realizing it reads like a foreign language to anyone outside the field.

For example, instead of saying I "reconciled accounts," can I say I "identified and resolved discrepancies to ensure data accuracy"? Instead of "prepared monthly financial statements," can I say "analyzed and presented financial data to inform key business decisions"?

Any tips or tricks for "de-jargonizing" my resume and highlighting the transferable skills I've gained in accounting?

Absolutely! Your resume needs to speak the language of your target audience. Think about the core skills behind your accounting tasks. Instead of "GAAP compliance," highlight your "meticulous attention to detail and adherence to regulations." Instead of "audit procedures," emphasize your "ability to analyze complex data and identify inconsistencies."

like

Performed monthly reconciliations to ensure data accuracy and independently resolved variances.

Maintained ownership over the preparation of financial statements and collaborated with upper management for review and revisions, if any.

For an accountant (based on your title here) be careful as many of these people are older and may raise an eyebrow over the words you use. ‘Preparing’ FS is different from ‘analyzing’ FS and ‘presenting’ it. And who did you ‘present’ it to that made informed key business decisions? Those are questions some hardo interviewer would ask and you have to be able to respond to based on your resume.

Words denoting ownership and responsibility are better than using jargons that no ordinary person would use and looks like Chat-GPT generated.

Tailor your resume for each specific job you apply for. Research the desired skills and keywords for those fields and then connect your accounting experience to them. For example, if you're interested in project management, highlight your experience with budgeting, forecasting, and deadline management. This shows employers you've done your homework and understand their needs.

I started working for a bank and am going through the background check. They found an arrest which was dismissed and the file was sealed a few days after the check. Embellished on several elements of the case. I am worried that giving them this report will cause me to be let go.
