A Line Producer can most definitely Agency Produce and deal with the different personalities. An Agency Producer CAN’T Line Producer IMO.
I’ve had a few calls and people almost gave me the job, but I’m honest when it comes to line producing. And it’s not that we couldn’t do the job.., it’s that we don’t have the contacts (crew members) to build a team.
All too LP that I know can easy grab the phone and call anyone in terms of a crew member.
Absolutely! Yes and Yes! But it takes a very long time.., maybe a couple of years. As you don’t want to be attached to just 1 Director

@FCB1 - know exactly what you mean about sitting near the monitor. I had a funny moment of realization my first couple weeks into agency work. On the production side, I was a line producer and assistant director. Lots of moving, lots of attention to detail all over the place, very focused on a singular job. I never understood the agency folks on their laptops in video village, always trying to get their attention on the monitor.
First few weeks agency side, I’m sitting in a color session. I was on 4 projects all at various stages, juggling a lot. I’m focused on an email and the colorist is trying to get my attention to the monitor. That moment I said, “wow, I get it now.”
So true, I’ve spent many Post sessions straightening out invoices to close a different job out or bidding a new one that just came in. Nice when u can focus on the session 150% but often one is stretched thin.

I went the other way. Spent almost 10 years in production, moved agency side 3 years ago.
What’s your experience been agency side in terms of hands on line producing vs traditional agency producing? Ultimately, you’re gonna get your hands dirty on the production side (which I miss to be honest). Lots of get it done, on the ground work. Depending on your background, maybe a biz dev role is right for you where you can leverage your agency connections within a production company?
You can also sell production companies on your agency experience if they’re going after client direct work.
I’ve worked more as a traditional agency producer, with a few years as a digital producer (website & app development). I worked as a digital producer for about 4 years, but the past 6 years I’ve been working in a traditional agency on mainly print and film production.
Coming from Production and now also agency producing - a good line Producer needs to stay up to date on SAG and union/non union guidelines. Knowing these well will help you help the agency producer and stay within the budget you gave them. In addition you gotta be a motivated person open to physical movement and lending a hand to all crew. My first agency job drove me nuts because I was asked to just sit near monitor and I am a hands on mover and shaker. I have since found the happy medium on Agency side but you should expect a lot more movement/running around. Agree with SP1 - love the amount of activity and energy of LP- but it will be more physically demanding.
FCB 1 what is your job title now or is it that you found the right agency to be a producer? I’m currently looking for that balance and deciding to go agency or brand.
You might also have some ability to rep directors to agencies. Just a thought.
I’m a director with experience in branded content, digital, and installation work. FYI
I’d look for brand side as well - I’ve been hunting too and since so many places are trying to work in house, I’ve seen a lot more postings for producers at beauty brands, fashion, athletics, etc.
That’s a great idea! Thanks
In the same boat here and looking at places who work client direct to leverage my agency experience.
Do you have any idea of rates for the production side? I am assuming they will be different from agency.
