Completely agree, it should mirror producers - Junior/Associate, Manager, Sr. PBM, Executive Manager, Director.
This is an interesting topic for us. I personally feel like there are really only 3 titles - Business Manager (or Business Affairs Manager, Production BM, etc), Sr. BM and Director. Everything else is made up to try to mirror an account mgmt structure. And I general feel it take 5-7 years at each title before advancing to the next, although these days it happens quicker for retention purposes. Curious as to your thoughts, and the thoughts of others.
I think there is and should be a Junior or Associate Business Manager. Many in BA are in their 40s or 50s. So we definitely need to train the next generation.
But I do feel like someone shouldn’t be a Senior for so long. I like the Producers titles: Associate, Regular, Sr, EP, Head. If we only have 3 titles for something like 30 or 40 years, it’s definitely not enough and a bit depressing to not be promoted for so long.
When a Senior BA is 10 years older than an EP, like I have been, it feels really wrong. Executive Business Manager? Or something like that? We need another title.
The function of producers is the same at every agency, while for BMs it can vary widely - so adding more titles I don't see as adding any clarity with respect to their practical function/level. All said, the opportunities for salary increases and job responsibilities shouldnt be locked into title changes for us.
Not really about clarity, more about respect earned for time put in. Coworkers do pay attention to titles.
