It sucks. Don't be afraid to pickup a contract to pay the bills, but realize that contract work is another animal than FTE. The biggest thing being is that there's lots of garbage people posing as recruiters and staffing companies. Just stick with the big staffing companies and hard pass the fly by nights with make em up names.
It’s V E R Y bad. There is no shame in Uber or retail to make the bills. Do what you need to do for you and your family. I hope things get better soon for us all.
As someone who has been laid off many times in California, here are the first things I do:
Apply for unemployment immediately.
Apply for any other government programs such as connectivity with Comcast or ATT for very low cost internet, and sometimes the phone bill can be on a program.
I qualified for food stamps and food banks, so do that if your household meets the qualifications.
Ask you employer for your employee file. This contains all of your paperwork and reviews. It’s good to have on-hand.
Download all paystubs from the past 12 months. You’ll need them to apply to the above programs.
I was able to apply for low income/no income health insurance through the state.
I think that’s all I have. Spend time putting together at least three versions of your resume and putting them out there on Monster, LinkedIn, etc.
It took me about 6 months to get a job.
Good luck out there!
Been at it for a month. Made it to two final rounds, a third wants me but is waiting on budget, and a few others in various stages. I have a few verbals for 2024 starts.
It’s definitely tougher but think the key here is networking and polishing your resume. I’ve been told my resume reads as very polished, and when that doesn’t open doors I have had folks in my network make introductions.
This time two years ago I turned down a few job offers which were actual comp increases. Now I’m fighting for jobs that are lateral or slightly decreasing on comp. It’s def a market correction.
Good luck all.
I have been at the job search for approx 11 months now. Luckily my previous employer offered a generous severance package. Thus far I qualified for approx 15 interviews and a finalist 3 times but never selected. Stay patient and don't give up as the new opportunity will find you.
Keep going and “if you’re going through hell keep going.” Winston Churchill. Been there and done that , there is light at then end of the tunnel .
