What was your school/GPA? That may still screen you 3 years out.
What type of ID? Med mal or slip n fall? You may need to spend a year doing midsize commercial lit before biglaw
Law School would be less of a consideration if you were coming from another big law firm, but since you aren't, it'd still be a factor.
PI insurance defense to Big Law year 3 would be a monumental jump. You’d probably need to be T-14, law review, and strong grades to make that kind of leap unless you are an excellent interviewee. Sadly, I don’t believe experience means a ton at that level for Big Law, particularly in comm lit if that’s what you’re going for because it’s one of the most competitive areas. They are more or less looking for foot soldiers to handle discovery at that level (not all, but most).
You might want to consider a 2-year pit stop at a mid size lit firm, and perhaps find a niche litigation practice area like FDCPA or ERISA. Then after two years you’ll be at the 3-5/4-6 year sweet spot.
I just saw your credentials on the other post they’re pretty strong I think you should go for it. Or a federal clerkship for a year or two then big law with a clerkship bonus.
You also will get bored out of your mind in big law as a litigator at this level. I jumped to big law in a specialized area and they basically have me just research and write memos and doc review. I used to depose people and run my own cases
You should dial back your case load, but trust me that the boring work would burn you out faster with the tight turn around a and minimal time allotted
I jumped from ID to Big Law as a third year, so if that’s what you want, know you can do it and go for it. Do not let others tell you what is impossible. I did go to a top 20ish school, B+ average grades, great resume work experiences, including federal clerkship. I went from car accident/slip and falls to a sophistical products liability practice.
I was in an ID firm before jumping to a 160ish attorneys firm that does big law type product liability litigation. I was a second year. I told them about my experiences of taking depo, drafting motions etc but then the question I got was: do you have any experiences reviewing a large amount of documents 😂😂😂 So, I guess just be prepared for questions like that.
You were taking depos as a first year? Yeesh
It’ll be tough as they judge insurance defense even though you have all that experience. It’ll depend on the type of litigation you are trying to join. Frankly, sometimes they have terrible litigators
