Direct entry APs typically take longer to build a network and function effectively. The 3 that I know either switched to the Expert AP path (need to be recognized for relevant expertise) or were counseled out.
Of course, my exposure was to a small sample size. I really hope your experience is different. Good luck!
Discreet as in people don't know their departure was due to being counseled, or that they get enough time for a soft landing?
My biggest piece advice may sound silly - but don’t be an asshole to your team. Yes you have experience in the industry but you will be new to the Firm, the way we work, and even some client situations compared to your teams. I’ve heard horror stories of direct hire APs who come in on their high horse and just run their teams into the ground. If people like working with you and feel like you are collaborative and open to coaching then you will get pulled in to more opportunities. The fastest way to get counseled out as direct hire AP is to come in and think you are here to “prove yourself”
Agree with this
OP...just curious about your interview process. Was it still case-based plus fit or was it more around your specific skill set and experience? TIA!
Thanks! 😊
Seems like you are not in big 4 now.
Definitely ask your contact at the firm to put you in touch with a partner or two that made it as an AP-hire.
Just did that.
Also speaking to someone who (I think) was counseled out from the same team. That should help.
What firm are you moving from? Would you not want to play safe and move as a partner later vs AP now if you are concerned about promo to partner?
I prefer the culture in tier 2 firms (ATK, OW etc) than the big 4. I have a lot of friends in big 4 - so, this is based on what I know from there.
Nothing really against big 4.
I also have AP interviews upcoming for McK. Anybody here knows what a ‘typical’ AP compensation looks like, and how it’s supposed to evolve? Feedback so far is that I should expect 2yr trajectory to make P, but I share OP’s concerns about the opportunity that is presenting itself here. And I want to make sure it’s going to be worth the blood, sweat, and tears of running hard again for 2 years. I am based in NYC, in case this matters
