Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

I learned that I will most likely be laid off over the next few weeks as well. I cried the day I found out. Then started applying places and have my first final round this week. This is hard, but think how lucky you are to know this. Many of our colleagues don’t and are in a much worse position. You get a head start. Start looking and apply now. Then, if you don’t get laid off, great.
I know how hard this is, but let’s get ahead of it and stick it to the man.
really everyone should be networking all the time just like what a contractor has to do. because at the end of the day we're all just contractors and are responsible for keeping our own pipelines strong.
Are you part of EY?

It’s probably less about backbone and more about leadership trying to figure out a way to not do that

Don't worry about leadership. Be glad you even heard about it through the grapevine and have a head start. I've heard /witnessed way too many companies just drop a bomb on employees one morning. Just focus on improving your skills, sending out resumes by the bucket load, reaching out to your network, saving money to last you for a while, updating your LinkedIn etc. Companies do whatever they want. We gotta look out for ourselves.
