Mostly to vent, but wonder if anyone else has had to deal with this…my team consists of a partner, shareholder, 3 associates, myself and a legal assistant. We have a busy docket, 70 active litigation files. For over a year I have been dealing with inexperienced legal assistants, mostly coming from other areas of law. The partner relies heavily on me to clean up the messes, fix the mistakes, etc., and HR is on me for doing too much admin, i.e., non-billable work.

Definitely echo A1. It’s important to let the partner know considering they rely on you heavily and knows the pressure you are under.

Have partners step in to protect you.

Then work to train up the legal assistants.

I truly believe it is HR’s selection of candidates. We are on LA#4 in a little over a year. The current one has had training for 6 months. Attention to detail and common sense is hard to train.
The partner has tried to step in but HR is not listening,

How do most people’s firms calculate billable hours for associates? In other words, what hours are counted towards your target? Do you get credit for things like CLE’s, mandatory trainings, etc.? What about pro bono work (assigned by the firm) or writing for firm publications? Or time that a billing partner writes off on paid matters? What about sick or other leave credits? Is it pretty much everyone’s experience that it’s just straight billable hours on paying clients?
