I made it a habit of not making a big deal whenever I leave the house. But before I go I leave a special treat for my pitbull, and I only give him this treat whenever I leave and when I come back home. That way he knows that whenever I give out his special snack, he'll get another one when I return!
I have so many owners that come in to the clinic and ask us about this. Two of the best things I recommend to them are leaving clothes around that smell like them maybe an old t shirt and also don't make a big deal about leaving
It takes a lot of patience and consistent desensitization training to overcome SA in most dogs. You can look up Malena DeMartini! She has some self-lead training that has worked for my pup. I still do training 3-4 times a week as we are only up to about a 3-hour threshold right now but that gives me a whole new world of being able to run errands, go into the office for a couple of hours, or even meet with friends :) just be patient is the best advice I can give and know that it’s neither your fault nor your dog's fault.
Is your dog crate trained? If not, that would be step one. When dogs get comfortable with their crate, it relieves so much separation anxiety. If you can practice crate training while you are home, and get to the point where you can give the dog relaxation periods in the crate with you out of the room, this helps drastically. Then build up to when you leave the house and overnight the dog can be in the crate.
I just want to say it’s really hard dealing with separation anxiety. Sometimes it is traumatic. Feeling overwhelmed and depressed is reasonable. There is a quote I read that says at its worst, separation anxiety is an unlivable nightmare for the dog and the owner. This was true for me. If you can afford a session with a CSAT before doing counter conditioning or desensitization that can be useful because doing CSAT training incorrectly can sensitize the dog to be ever more hyper-aware. Malena Demartini has an excellent program of CSATS, but it is extremely expensive. Julie Naismith has a podcast and a Facebook group though, and that may help. Good luck OP.
Wow awesome information for anyone dealing with separation anxiety of a pet
Behavioral training. The dog needs to know it will be okay when you leave. Make it a good experience or try to leave without him/her knowing. Plan ahead , get the dog worn out like running /catching a ball for a good hour / or take a long walk before. You can also give toys that make them think/work for the treat. Playing with a toy is just as draining as running around. You can get a lick mat add yogart/peanut butter .. whatever you’d like and stick it in the freezer overnight for when you leav
This will take time. Doesn’t happen over night. Start giving the lick mat or toy with treats while you home, let the dog work on it and keep going in and out the house quietly and come back , not acknowledging the dog . So the dog will get use to it. Dog knows the sound of your keys for example and knows that means your leaving. So carry your keys around , leave the house - go outside for 5mins then come back in and just keep doing that until dog knows it’s okay when you leave. Exercise for dog
