I don’t think so. Autistic people can also struggle to name or express emotions, and if the HR / recruiter is aware of certain conditions, they may wrongfully misinterpret what you’re putting forward. Instead, for behavioral questions, you can say that you’re “straightforward” or “no nonsense,” et cetera.
Rising Star
Do you really know it turns people off or are you being self conscious about it?
People look for signals and mirror them subconsciously unfortunately.
It's like going on a date. Both parties are looking for middle ground or something they can identity and respond to.
Interviewing's the same. Chatting with stranger's the same.
Smiling and nodding a long isn't difficult. If you're a serious person, pause, show you're being thoughtful and then respond. You can even verbalize and let them know you're thinking about it cos it's not something you're flippant about.
You just gotta show some visual cues so people aren't grasping at straws.
Otherwise it might become a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.
I come across as stoic
Can you put post it notes around your laptop (assuming this is over zoom) that say “Smile before replying to one question.” “Nod slightly to show interest when interviewer shares info about role.”
Basically fake it till you make it.
No. Not unless they ask for strengths and you spin it as you say calm under pressure.
Nah, be yourself.
Rather than seek a pass, you’ll benefit long-term—in all aspects of your life—if you find a way to compensate (aka, pretend). I’m no expert, but I’m sure there are people who can help you become more expressive. Robert De Niro, for instance, is very shy. But you wouldn’t know it from watching him at work. Anthony Hopkins is autistic. Please don’t go through life using only a few musical notes when there are entire symphonies to play.
Do you mean you don’t smile? I think I’d briefly say something about why you don’t smile because it would help people make sense of your expression and they wouldn’t think you were feeling displeased or bored with the interview.
Pro
Does it interfere with your ability to small talk and get along with people and make friends?
No
There’s lack of emotion and lack of passion. You can be passionate about your work and experience while not expressing emotion during it. Try practicing how you describe your work. Think of yourself as on a talk show and you need an anecdote.
