Just signed the outside employment form in KPMG onboarding system. I actually wanted to start dabbling in creative writing as a potentially monetizable hobby, but I'm guessing this may pose issues.
Definitely interested in the "exception from this policy may be requested if provision of non-professional services doesn't interfere with one's duties of causes conflict of interest" clause, though. Has anyone been able to get one of those before?

Hi - new manager here to offer some advice as I got the same comment when I was an associate! If you hear about a client call coming up that day in passing during a status meeting or during conversations, chime in and ask if you can sit in and take notes. When you email the client, Cc that manager or compile all the communication you’ve done so you have evidence that you interact with the client to defend yourself with when he says you need more client exposure again. If you have a review note or discussion where your reviewer says “we probably need to follow up with the client” take the initiative of setting up a call to discuss and include your reviewer and lead the call by asking the question you were going to email, especially if you can tell it’s something that will turn into a back-and-forth chain. As you’re doing documentation, discrepancies are bound to come up that opens the opportunity to connect with the client. As long as you can point to calls and emails with the client, you’ll be able to prove him wrong. It can be scary interacting with the client but it’s the fastest way to learn and grow (and prove to him you took the feedback to heart). Mostly importantly, remember that you’re doing your best and to not be too hard on yourself - you’re very early in your career and have plenty of time to incorporate this feedback appropriately :) Hope this helps!
Thank you for these insights - very helpful and much appreciated!
I’m assuming you’re a L1 going into your second year as an associate?
I ask myself this a lot on how can we get staff more exposure if remote and if most things can be covered through our request list portal (Suralink in my case). When I was a staff, we got a lot more exposure since we’d email the client and now feels a lot more transactional being able to post things to Suralink. As an associate, I had to awkwardly ask why I wasn’t included on status meetings, etc. If you’re on an audit long term (for than just a week or two) I think it’s totally fair to ask to be included on status meetings and no good IC would look down on you for asking. Even if you don’t have anything to say, I find it helpful to listen in so that you’ll eventually know how to lead calls. You can also take initiative asking to be involved in status emails sent to the client. Either helping write and sending the email or even just being cc’d on the incharges emails to be in the loop and see how they communicate with the client. It’s your incharges and managers job to help get you this exposure, but also need to be proactive in advocating for yourself and seeking learning opportunities.
Did your manager provide you another context other than "get more client exposure"?
