Need advice for resigning while on bench. I already have a start date with the new employer. Should I do a traditional two week notice or give <=1 week notice instead? My goal is to not burn bridges, but I also don’t want to get let go on the spot since I have nothing to “wrap up” besides HR tasks. I’ve read on here that sometimes they will let you go day of and pay you out for two weeks but I don’t see why any firm would do that for somebody not currently performing billable work...

If you’re in the US no one has to pay you out 2 weeks if they let you go that day. You get paid out what you work.

Also, you’re on the bench... there are no bridges on a bench.

like

If your firm is reputable they will pay out 2 weeks even if they waive the notice period. I have not heard of anyone who quit that didnt get the 2 weeks

Director at my midsize firm put in their 2 weeks while on the bench and was let go immediately. Didn’t pay out 2 weeks either. We’d normally be classified as a “reputable” firm, but times are tough right now....

funny

Depends where you’re out the door to? A friend tried to give 4 weeks notice before jumping ship to a competing firm and was not so kindly told to return his devices by end of day. He was paid out for 2 weeks though.

funny

4 weeks? Jesus 2 weeks is standard. Doing too much.

Yeah I’d give the two weeks and hope they bounce you and you get paid.

Give the 2 week notice. Some firms will walk you to the door immediately others will want you around for 2 weeks to crank out proposals.

Either way, they will pay you the 2 weeks.

I have given notice in the past and had both extremes....pls give us an extra week and ok, today is your last day.

Has it ever happened to you that you meet someone and they say they want a “LTR” however they don’t even put the effort to say hi or ask you things?

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

If you do billable work on a given PTO/vacation day, do you still count that day as vacation? Or do you get that vacation day "back"? Or do you only get the part that you billed "back"? (Or some other option.)

15 YOE, recently started my first tech PR job at a large, stable company & have been asked to get ~20 SMEs in front of media. Subject matter is not sexy. I lead PR for all of U.S. & have no other PR colleagues. My agency’s budget is 100k/year & they’re spread too thin to hit their KPIs. I feel set up to fail & feel we should be focusing on a handful of SMEs and only our sexiest topics. Any advice on mitigating unrealistic expectations for coverage? Anyone handled similar problems in the past?

Do you think it is time to find another job when your PIC is a micro manager, never trained you when you got hired, expects you to know things no one ever told you about in the first place, texts and calls you in the morning with questions you don’t have an answer to (I work evening shift so I’m mostly sleep when he reaches out), assumes the worst about everything, plots against you anyway, lies all the time, they don’t even do their job, they leave their trash behind etc. gives me anxiety.

I’ve been on the bench with J1 for about 3 months. I was worried that because I couldn’t find another project, I would get laid off so I found J2, which pays more, is very meeting heavy, but I really like. I’ve kept J1 because I’m still on the bench doing absolutely nothing and getting paid. Thinking about looking for a role on a project with J1 that’s not along my career path but will allow for me to do work with no calls so that I can manage both jobs. Does anyone have experience or advice?

Should I do it? I don’t want to fail at both jobs. Is that even reasonable to ask someone to work on both jobs?
