OP, you are the only one able to make this decision. A year ago I chose swithcing firms instead of going to industry. I justified it with the higher pay, and more advertised flexibility and was scared to leave PA. I regret it every day. Wish I had looked for the right industry role. Partners in PA change. Flexibility is okay, up to a point. PA always seems to end up understaffed and in crisis (during busy seasons). My kids miss me and this drives me insane. You make your own choices... but time with kids should come first. Someone on your team can have good intentions, but PA stretches beyond intentions.
Just based on the way you wrote that it seems like you think the new job may be better! Personally, a consistent 40 hours seems more reliable especially having kids than a could be 32 hour could be 70 hour schedule! Like the other person said, don’t be afraid to leave. Worst case scenario you can make your way back to public. Just make sure this job you’re looking at is the right one. But hey an extra $1k per paycheck basically sounds amazing
As a parent of 2 young kids myself, I’d go with the new job you described. Missing out on Working from home is significant, but (optimistically) that option might come up if you demonstrate your value and work ethic.
Vested after only 3 years. I’ve been with the same firm almost 10 years and am really frustrated with the leadership. However, they are offering me a reduced schedule so I could stay home with the kids more. The new place has no option for working from home but my commute is better. What would you do? I am worried my current company will offer a reduced schedule but won’t actually help offload the work.
Your commute would be better, no OT, and pays more... take it!! I took a pay cut to reduce my hours and work from home, and I do not regret it. I have 2 little ones too and would love if I got paid $25k more to NOT work OT!
I work from home about 40% of the time and find myself working more and not being able to contribute to the household chores/maintenance, hobbies, friends or relax as by the time I get home it's dinner, put kids to bed, catch up with wife, then off to the basement office to work, even outside of the typical busy seasons. Not being able to work remotely in exchange for a 40 hour work week sounds good to me!
