I had interviewed for an internship position at EY for technology consultant program for summer 2022 and got a call where they extended an offer. I wanted to know if I can defer the internship offer to fall 2022 or a later start date after summer.
I apologize as I cannot reply to a comment or DM on this platform to anyone, but thanks for your answers in advance.

No consulting firm wants a sub-contractor leading a project and owning client relationships
A1 & BAH 1 good point!!
This happened to me and it was because I had been on the project so long and they couldn’t raise my Bill rate with the client. They gave my new peer the lead because they introduced him and charged more for him instantly.
4 years later that move still impacts me because that person is now a level above me, I’m sure partially because of this project he was all of a sudden a “lead” even though it was really me doing all the work
What you’ve concluded is exactly what’s going on and you shouldn’t take that as a reflection of your worth. Firm X is not responsible for your career so I’m not sure why you’d think they’d consider you.
But I do think you should be having conversations of your own with your manager asking for an opportunity to lead a project on your own.
Exactly my next point I wanted to get advice on. My leadership knows that I deliver quality work and acknowledges my accomplishments. They often think my contribution to this project is invaluable. If I bring this up to them as a concern, would this taint my image? I just don’t want this to be a poor reflection of my performance.

At this point companies have to use their employees as much as possible and have to do whatever they can to keep them employed. There's definitely benefits to being a subcontractor but there's also risk that comes during economic downturns
Do you think the decision was purely performance based or because they want to retain the position within their own firm or circle?
They want to retain the position within the firm. On my last project they capped leadership from the sub at 1 “senior manager” and 1 “manager”.
