My kids are in their early 20s and they were in day care and before/after school care from 12 weeks through 8th grade. They turned out fine.
I understand the struggle of putting your child inside the care of others. I too only have 1 child and I was a SAHM for 2 years..and went back to work..for exactly what you say "get ahead". I am glad I did it and do not have any regrets. It's a tough decision.... but one I think that will work out for you all. Especially with your child being older..the socialization will help...as well as building up more of a nest egg.
Sounds like your bad investment is the reason why you’re feeling behind. Have you considered how much your childcare cost would be if your wife were to go back to work and if you’d still net positive? If yes then that’s your additional income. For a kid that’s 5 years old, with hopefully no special needs, it sounds like the right time for your wife to go back to work. Even some temp or part time job could be a good way to get you guys used to new future. For a small family of 3, solely based on your base income, I think you’re doing fine. There wasn’t enough you shared with us to comment on how to increase your NW. Therefore my suggestion would be to 1) put the kid to child care, 2) wife goes back to full-time job in a reasonable timeframe.
How much would she bring in and is the 300-350 only your salary?
With childcare and depending on cost of living, it’s kind of a wash if she stays home right because 80-100 is really 50-70 after tax? Living on 350 is pretty decent living (including savings) most places unless you’re weighted down by massive loans or private school.
