You need a portfolio with the kind of work you’re trying to get hired for. If that’s creative advertising then you most likely need headlines and activation ideas.
Check out the student portfolios at moderncopywriter.com. That’s what you’re up against and the way things are run at a lot of agencies right now means there’s very few opportunities in what was already a very competitive industry. So you need to have one of the best books a CD has seen or know someone in the business who can get you in.
Good luck.
Thank you so much!
https://talktoacreativedirector.com is a great resource for you to talk to seasoned pros who are willing to help you. We are all volunteers so are already saying yes to wanting to talk to folks who want advice. Simply read the bios and sign up on their calendar in their bio. I’d recommend speaking to as many as you can. The person who set up this site could not have made it easier for everyone to connect. Gone are the days of blindly reaching out to someone on LinkedIn and hoping you’ll get a response. I wish you the best of luck. It’s a tough business to break into but after 25 years of doing it, I still love it.
If you’re starting out def check out “hey whipple squeeze this” and “the copy book” they’re great resources for beginners and veterans alike.
Happy to chat sometime about starting out. Just dm me.
1. You’re best chance may be with a small agency will to give you a shot because they can underpay you.
2, Buy a couple books so you are smarter. These books will help you all your career. They won’t help get a job. They may help you keep it.
The books: The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing and On Positioning. These give you New Eyes. Use them to look at your portfolio.
Good luck.

Go to ad school. Its expensive but i still think its the best way to get your foot in the door. It teaches you the basics which seems to be lacking in a lot of younger creatives ive run across. Its not just writing. Its concepts, unique ideas, blah blah blah.
