So sorry you’re going through this. Reach out to your firm’s HR department ASAP if the official process isn’t clearly listed on your firm’s internal site. Your doctor will typically need to fill out certain forms for your firm’s disability insurance provider and state disability. As far as alerting your teams, it is as simple as emailing the share partners and letting them know you will be starting leave on x date. They don’t need to know any additional details. During the leave, you’ll typically remain in contact with your firm’s HR department for payroll purposes if the state is subsidizing some of your pay. Take care of yourself and continue to prioritize your mental health above everything
Just say it's a medical leave (which it is, because you'll need to get it doctor-documented) if you feel uncomfy just saying "leave" in general. I've had tons of my team members go out on medical leave.
Make a "matter coverage spreadsheet" with each matter you're on, the supervising attorney/ any other team members, the contact(s) at the client, and the current status of the workflow (e.g., draft with counterparty, underwriting call scheduled for X date). Then as you're looking for folks to cover matters you can provide them that info. A couple days before you head out, send the updated spreadsheet (with the coverage attorneys filled in) to the partners in your group.
