Food for thought this a Friday. Quiet quitting has been trending for the last few weeks. This is problematic in two ways. A) Doesn’t actually identify the root cause for burnout (I.e abuse at work or poor company culture B) Completely dismisses a whole demographic of people unable to do the bare minimum without facing penalty. Any other thoughts? https://www.theroot.com/why-is-quiet-quitting-a-thing-for-white-people-but-n-1849407594/amp

What’s meant by decent grades? And how does your law school rank? Are you at a regional school or one that sends people off into large markets?
Unfortunately I think this makes a big difference. Decent grades generally at a T14 will mean something very different than decent grades in a regional school outside of the market you’re interested in.

No interest in working at your current firm?
If I stay at my current (small) firm, i would make less than half than big law associates for relatively same hours. There is a chance for partner under 10 years where the money is but I’m not sure I’m ready to decide this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life!
It can’t hurt to reach out and network with alums. I’d strongly recommend reaching out just for purposes of learning about the alum’s firm and their practice area. Speaking for myself, I’m always happy to talk to current students from my alma mater and pass resumes along (assuming that they have decent numbers). Even with OCI delayed, I’d reach out, do my homework on firms and try to get my application materials in before the OCI rush.
Thank you
Hiring partner here. Yes, reach out early and often, but many firms are holding tight on resumes until the OCI season picks up. Here is the conundrum that firms are dealing with: you apply, but OCI isn’t until Jan., so I don’t want to give you an offer without knowing what I may get and you won’t accept an offer until you see what you can get (in Jan) unless I’m your first choice (which you won’t know until you see what is out there).
That being said, an ex-paralegal is super valuable to firms. First, you know the game and the players and STILL wanted to go law school. That tells me your in it for the long game (too many people do this job without knowing what they are getting into). Second, and no offense to my big law colleagues here, but you probably actually know how to do actual things (there are too many “corporate attorneys” that haven’t the slightest clue on how to actually take the steps to set up a corporation...and I’m not taking about putting together corporate documents, but I mean actually filing the documents, obtaining an EIN, etc..).
It’s never too early to reach out and reaching out to alumni may actually get in the hands of the right people at the right time.
No problem. If it makes you feel any better, a partner on our board who is the head of a department at our firm (and a rain maker) actually originally started at our firm as a paralegal before going to law school. Just keep hustling as you have been, the good firms will know it when they see it, if someone tells you otherwise it’s their loss.
