There are days you will be underpaid and days you will be overpaid. Hopefully they average out.
If you ever feel like this remember you’re likely going to be underpaid quite a lot. I’m in a large firm and in terms of average billing my firm bills me at $350 per hour for one of our global clients, I don’t even make a tenth of that per hour. So don’t worry about it. There’ll be days you’ll be too overworked to eat dinner and there’ll be lighter days where you can actually get a run in.
Small piece of advice - don’t ever let them think you think you’re not work $200k. You definitely are if you’re being offered it. Best of luck! 💜
Thanks for the support! I totally agree on getting paid more for the sheer number of hours I work. I plan on trying to make a move to a foreign law firm (and better paying of course) at some point just trying to get more commercial experience under my belt. Just got to figure out the bridging situation out.
If possible I would work on putting that concern completely out of your head. Most of the biglaw associates around here spend a big part of their day minding trackers and doing other basic clerical work in rigidly hierarchical, highly leveraged practices. (Myself included.)
Just do good work and know that everyone is trying to figure stuff out on some level.
Do it. I worked at two small firms for about 6 years and never broke $100k. My loans got bigger bc my IBR payments didn't even cover interest. I never took vacations bc I didn't have extra money. I finally moved to a big firm and doubled my salary. They wouldn't have offered if they didn't feel confident you're worth it.
Imposter syndrome! I dealt with it when I started big law. Under billed bc I felt like i shouldn’t be charging clients SO MUCH money. But once you start doing the work I think you’ll gain confidence. Also you’ll see your coworkers have strengths and weaknesses just like you do. No one is “worth” more than anyone else
Felt the exact same when I lateraled from a small firm to a mid-size firm for the first few months. Fake it till you make it, everyone else is too.
Chill! If they want to pay you that much it’s because you’re worth that much to them. Just make sure you do a good job lol
Very very much appreciate the replies! Funny how an bunch of anonymous strangers can have such an effect on you. Also I hear you on the IBR payments. I’ve broken $100 by a bit but my balance seems to keep growing! This next one will hopefully help me start making a dent!
You are worth it. Trust me… when you have your first soul-crushing 300-hour month at this new firm, you’ll come to the same conclusion.
You are worth your fair market value and that’s what that offer is. You’ll be great!
Trust me, if they didn’t think you were worth the salary, they wouldn’t pay it.
Thanks! A little weary now that there is a reason for the salary (there’s no hours target but they might be ridiculous). Currently at a lifestyle focused boutique billed about 2000 last year with 1850 target.
