Many are trying to force people back to justify the real estate costs and claiming it’s for training and collaboration.
I personally think a hybrid schedule is necessary for training. Especially when training new associates.
Before I left private practice my firm was moving to that sort of arrangement. Attorneys who committed to coming in 3+ days per week would keep their assigned offices, those who didn’t could hot desk. This was a large firm (1000+ attorneys) with offices in NY, DC, SV, etc. I believe the policy applied to every office.
This makes sense. Maybe not for attorneys, but I believe if people refuse to come in, their jobs are at high risk of being outsourced for cheaper labor.
At my firm if you want your own office you commit to come in 3x a week otherwise you hotel. I hotel and love it. If the team I work with wants to get together in person, we pick a day to all go in. I generally go in a couple times a week on average when I am not traveling.
What is "hoteling?" You're not the first to mention this and I genuinely don't know what it is.

The NY office of my firm got rid of offices for juniors. Midlevels get their own office but no window. Seniors and partners get offices with windows.
I’m SF, no reserved offices. Everyone hotels.
Can you share the name of your firm?

My small firm is downsizing by at least 1/2. Only 2 of 8 want to come in, 2 others will share an office and the other 4 will have either 1 shared office or work stations because they will rarely come in.
Hoteling and subleasing space. BL.
Holman Fenwick downsized in Singapore to allow more WFH. They now have open plan with empty offices for those who want them.
We have about 7 years left on our lease in a very expensive east coast major market. Once that is up, then we will almost certainly downsize the space and do hoteling. It just makes economic sense.
