I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my mom a few years back as well. It was hard. It still is. But I've never heard of a company not offering Bereavement paid time off. Especially for immediate family. You have enough stress going on without worrying about your finances. Unless it is considered part of your PTO bucket, I might consider putting in a verbal request and voicing your concerns. It sounds like a policy you are going to try and change anyway, so why not start with you? Good luck and take care.
I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom a few years ago. I received three bereavement days at the time. I took two weeks off of work and luckily my manager was very understanding and just gave me a lot of that time without having to use PTO time. I hope you work for a great leader.
Sorry for your lost
I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom. I honestly would look at employers who care more for their people than what you have right now. To not have any bereavement leave is sad. I hope that it is just because they don't have a "policy" but allow you to take the time you need to take care of everything. I have had a policy that states 3 days (which is not enough for immediate family), however, discretion from my leader in how many days I was able to take off. I hope they pay you for the time you need.
I am currently working for a small (75) people company and they don’t offer any paid bereavement at all. It’s sad.

So very sorry for your loss!!
I am so sorry to hear about your mom and your lack of bereavement leave. I haven't heard of any company without a bereavement policy-my past companies have been 3-5 days.
I cannot imagine how a person can cope with grief, travel, funeral arrangements, etc. all in just 3-5 days or worse, no days, is beyond me.
I would imagine there are many others at your company who have gone through something similar, which could help you make a strong case for a bereavement policy. You may also find info. through SHRM or other HR resources that talk about best practices in benefits and maybe a discussion on bereavement leave.
I hope you can make that change happen. It shows support for employees during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.
Good luck.
so sorry for your loss. If I were you, I'd ask if there was any consideration for your particular situation: 1. travelling far to be with family, 2. it is immediate family and naturally a very difficult time for you. At most places I worked at we'd offer more than the policy wording if the employee had to travel far, ie. abroad. I'd also suggest that a bereavement policy needs to be written and consider that staff will sadly need to use it on occasions because this is unacceptable.
Thank you all for your input… Hands-down, no doubt one of the worst weeks of my life… I also ended up getting very sick… high fever… I went to the ER just for peace of mind… And reassurance… I’m OK… Now I’ve got that Bill… But I’ll be OK …I’ve been muddling through work but really not 100% at all
Very sorry for your loss and what a disappointment. Consider yourself an agent of change.

I am so sorry for the loss of your mum. That must have been incredibly difficult, especially while dealing with travel and practical arrangements. I hope you are able to take the time you need to grieve and be with your family.
