Care less. I think that’s advice I gave to myself.
"A career in law is a long game." So don't lose hope if you're not where you want to be right now. Finding the right niche or job can turn everything around.
Follow your intuition. If something bothers you and it pertains to your job, push back.
For example, once they wanted me to drive back and forth between point A to point B for an inspection and then back to point A. Total distance was 3.5 hours each way. I told them I would stay the night and got push back from the partner. I knew it was wrong to drive back in one day, so i responded with my initial request of spending the night. W lunch to factor in, and the inspection as well, I needed to spend the night.
I even informed them that if I wanted to be a truck driver, I would have became one. Never got told to not spend the night at another inspection again. Ppl will really try to milk you. Don’t let them.
Be a self-advocate and ask for what you want.
Don’t cut your own time.
Take your vacation.
Double check important deadlines like discovery cutoffs.
Work hard to build the skills you want early.
Resilience and hard work will really pay off.
Don’t allow another practitioner (partner, manager, colleague, etc) define how you will practice. It’s easy to follow someone else’s style - but trust yourself and stick to your guns.
When you are starting out, the partners are your clients.
To stop doubting yourself, no one actually knows what they are doing, and it’s not always you sometimes it’s the situation. And as hard as it may be when you leave work or stop working from home for the day leave it there. I know from my own personal experience it’s simply not healthy to obsess over it all. Everyone’s out here playing their game, figure out what your game is and run it!!!! But don’t let the job run you— it’ll lead you down a hopeless road. I don’t wish it on anyone!
