Lmao. Not gonna lie GTs vacation policy is a legit reason not to work there
Not sure I'd call it petty, but....
My interviews were more than 30 years ago with Big 8.
The Director of Recruiting at Deloitte Haskins & Sells simultaneously offered me a job and called me stupid (yes, he used the word stupid) and questioned my value. Go figure, I still remember his name. Definitely made that one an easy choice to remove from my list.
Never interviewed with Peat Marwick (now KPMG) because there was a guy in my class who interned there and he was a douche. I guess that one is a little petty 😀
I’m unfamiliar with Grant Thornton’s vacation policy. What makes it so undesirable?
@SA2 - first of all, we would never hire someone without an interview... that’s just ballix haha. Secondly, it’s to ease the burden on the recruiting team. They deal with hundreds or thousands of applications - we want them to focus on the right candidates. And for the applicants themselved - we don’t want to act like we’re interested when we’re really not, so just keep on recruiting elsewhere.
My GPA was crap back in college and I got “no news” from RSM and Deloitte... I totally understood why they didn’t respond and didn’t get butt hurt - especially at the offices I was applying to. I still ended up accepting offers from both firms after I had some experience - it didn’t change my perception of them at all.
@Partner 1, fair point. My comment was for the situation when there has already been dialogue with a candidate. If an application is sent in and nothing is done with it I understand why this would cause tremendous burden on everyone. But he way Manager 1 phrased it, sounded like to me that there was a least some interaction
Out of big 4 I’d only work for EY in Assurance or PWC for tax because I’ve been a client of all 4 and these are the ones that treat their clients the best and bring the most knowledge to the table while staying practical (or as practical as you can with the PCAOB hanging around - did I mention I’d NEVER work for the PCAOB?)
PCAOB tried to recruit me a few years ago - their idea of work/life balance is that you “only” travel 30 weeks out of the year. Seriously?!!
I can’t believe Protiviti only interviews exceptional candidates
Would not work for pwc bc they seem really stuck up. I had an interview for an internship and the guy made sure to tell me he went to Penn State. Then went on to say he interviews candidates from ivy league schools, so why should he hire me? Also, at a job fair I met a guy who left EY to work for pwc. When I asked why, he said the people at EY didn't take their work seriously...
Won’t work for Plante Moran ever since a client we picked up off of them referred to them as Planet Moron
When I was interviewing for internships in the Denver market, PwC didn’t offer me one. EY offered me my first choice, an internship in the FSO in New York. During the financial crisis, PwC tried to get a number of us to switch because many financial services companies folded into their clients (eg Bear Sterns into JP Morgan, Lehman into Barclays, etc.) and they didn’t have enough people. They offered me a salary bump and an actual bonus in a year that EY was going to give no raises. Still said no. Years later, I was considering a boomerang back to EY but also interviewed with PwC in San Francisco, and got a quick and good offer. Still said no. Went back to EY for a few more years, in 3 different offices and became a senior manager. No regrets.
FTO has been a good move for many. I’ve taken 25+ days for the past two years. Sure, no payout but I would have been negative under our legacy PTO policy
collision is why I left EY
One of the partners at EY went to a rival school and, during my office visit, she just kept bringing up that my school sucked at football. I don't even care about football. Bringing it up once or twice is fine, but it got old after that. I got an offer but decided to go KPMG and that was definitely one of the reasons.
I hear RSM is the same and most likely BDO is headed that way with the recent changes to the PTO policy
Manager 1: I'm glad I don't work for you because you sound unprofessional as hell and with little empathy for people. I understand the recruiting team gets tons of emails, but from what I heard of EY, Deloitte, and PwC, and from KPMG (which I didn't get an offer from), all those recruiters had the time to send an email to my classmates or to me saying that they regret it, it's a strong class of candidates, we weren't accepted to next round interview, etc. I'm willing to bet a pretty large sum of money that the Big 4 gets WAY more applications than RSM. And it's ONE email after the interview, which they could have sent in mass if they bcc'd to all rejected candidates. Aka not that hard. Also, don't know where you work but Deloitte used to hire experienced hires without interviews in my area. So yes, people do get offers without interviews if you didn't know that.
Partner 1: I agree with you. If it was just application time and no facetime, I wouldn't have such a low opinion of RSM.
PWC 10: so many red flags went off regarding you
I didn’t go to GT because they don’t have Roth 401(k) option
The FTO policy at GT is awesome and it works for me.
I took a solid 6 weeks off as a result of FTO when I was at GT. It’s actually pretty nice in practice.
We have been super successful in our consulting practice with the flex PTO model. It has to be supported with a bias to YES vs reasons for not approving PTO requests which has helped make ours work.
We are hiring so reach out to someone in the ATLANTA office. Not tax/external audit but consulting opportunities.
