Email everybody you know. Tell them you need a job. Most agencies give referral bonuses so people are motivated to bring you in. You’ll be fine.
Saw it coming. Wound up WAY happier and making mucho mas dinero. Now I’ll never allow a place to make me that miserable ever again.
“Believe me... in my life, I’ve been fired many times.” - George Carlin
So I’ve been fired and let go in this business several times. Depends on where you work and who you work for.
Each time, not only have I bounced back, but I’ve come out better - usually by getting hired at a better place and for more money.
Here’s an example - I worked freelance at an agency in NYC named after a famous ad man. Had some differences with the Account Director, who made the call to not renew my three month increment contract. Within three weeks, I was employed at another agency in NYC with its roots in France, freelance, making significantly more money in an hourly rate situation.
Have I disclosed I was fired or let go? Maybe slipped my mind... but I usually did say that I was no longer employed due to “staff changes” or “business needs.”
This business is all about networking, and who you know. If you’ve just been fired, which I’m assuming by the nature of your post, reach out to everyone in your network who might be able to help. LinkedIn for days. The usual spots.
You can overcome this and come out better. It requires confidence, a clear head, and patience.
You will bounce back. It might take a bit, but it’s really not a big deal. You’ll go to another agency that will be a better fit for you and while this experience may suck, it will also be valuable. Put your focus on job searching.
Did you disclose you were let go?
I was fired from a place after only a few months of joining. Even though I felt a target on my back, it still caught me off-guard. I hustled my ass and landed at a company that has been the best stop of my career. I try to believe it worked out for the best.
I was let go in mass layoffs. It sucked but I ended up in a place that was a much better fit working for someone who really helped push my career.
Fired. Reached out to everyone, did some lame freelance, then four months later got a freelance gig at a top agency. Busted my hump and got hired, went on to great success.
I was laid off after making an official complaint about sexual harassment against one of my bosses. I got freelance soon after and eventually hired - what took longer was getting over the feeling myself, even though the reason why I left my previous agency was never disclosed to anyone. You can do it! Remember to be kind to yourself. And often you’ll be better up at the next place you go full time in. Trust that the world will get you there when the time is right.
Laid off 3 weeks after having our first child. That was fun — talk about stressful.
It took a little while but I bounced back. You’ll do the same. 👍
Thank you everyone for your kindness. I’m shocked because this has never happened to me and I’m far too early in my career (I thought) for this to happen to me, but the place was toxic, and I got a different offer today that might in fact be better for me!
Sending positivity to everyone on this thread! I’m glad it worked out for y’all, and I hope it does for me too.
Did you ever tell anyone what happened if you were fired or let go?
It can influence people’s perception of you, whether they realize it or not.
I’m glad you have a good opportunity already, hope it works out much better for you!
