It’s just weather. I don’t know why people get all worked up. Anyway - take vitamin D tablets and workout in the AM. You should be fine.
I also have seasonal issues. I have decide to take the positive route. Works most of the time and Vitamin D works wonders.
It’s not just weather for me, but thanks for your input nonetheless.
Chicago is a great city, with tons to see and do. You’ll enjoy it.
Take vitamin D and B.
You don’t have to be outside other than walking from your car to the building.
People honestly make too big of a deal about our winters. Sure it’s cold, but unless you go frolicking in the snow, you are outside just a few minutes a day. Yeah, it sucks you can’t be outside in a 60 degree weather but that’s why we are not in CA. I only own a parka and pair of snow boots for walking my dog. I always think it’s hilarious when there are posts every fall about what coat and pants should I buy for traveling to Chicago.
Haha you touched on items to purchase prior to me actually hinting at that, so I appreciate it and will invest in those as well. Thanks!
Make sure you’re up on your vitamin D and plan outdoor activities. Make sure you’re walking around during the day, even when it’s cold - bundle up and walk to get lunch if you can. I find seasonal depression affects me much less when I work on walking outside.
As it gets closer to the holidays if you’re in the loop I would walk past the Macy’s windows or things like that.
Ear muffs are essential!
Might be cold and windy, but Chicago is a beautiful city with great restaurants and people so there’s lots of upside here.
I live in Chicago and absolutely hate the weather. Depending on where your office is there might be the Pedway to it. It is a basement level that connects some of the downtown buildings. If so try to get hotel or apartment that you can walk from to your office via the Pedway. This way you can walk inside from home to office. Pick a hotel or building if renting that has a great gym. Even if a nice gym is close you will not want to get your winter gear on to walk there to change to workout clothes and back to winter gear after. So you will end up not working out. Many buildings have fantastic gyms for this reason. Most important is your cloth. You will feel way better in a Montclair or Canada Goose coat. Spend the money and buy winter cloths. Thermal undershirt. The right shoes for winter weather, scarf, coat with a hood that has the fur around the hood, this keeps the wind and blowing snow out of your face. Gloves a must. Coat should have a pocket for phone easy to reach. Think of these things when you buy cloths. You do not want to take gloves off to get phone. You can get food delivered so you go out less. If you don’t live near office live near where you want to go out at night. Keep yourself close to where you want to be to minimize walking in weather
Well said!
Plan to take some PTO in Jan/Feb (flex trip if possible) and go to a warm weather location. Florida is easy from Chicago. That will give you something to look forward to!
UV Lamps are another great potential to help with the seasonal depression part particularly if your client site keeps you inside with less sunlight for long hours!
Run around millennium park in the morning
Make an effort to get out to restaurants, etc even if it’s cold. People at bars are very friendly and you’ll feel better for some company, even if you don’t interact. Vitamin D and B are key, I also find a couple of magnesium supplements in the morning helps, too.
I do Soulcycle in the winter, because when I’m done I’m roasting and euphoric. Helps keep the winter blues at bay better than a run in a gym alone and I can throw sweats on and walk home. Feels great.
Finally...don’t believe all the hype. People love living here.
Walk outside as much as you can to/from work. It is invigorating. The key for me is layers you can remove as you warm up (the office will be hot), a coat with a hood (blocks the wind and is always there if you forget your hat), a good cashmere scarf (not itchy), and a ear flap fur-lined (fake fur) hat (they don’t mess up hair and covering the ears is key).
It’s a great city, enjoy!
Thank you so much
Thank you all! I feel much better! ☺️
Nothing a Canada Goose can’t fix.
