Question on generalist vs specialist path to becoming a CXO at a tech company!! I am in mid-40s, work for FAANG at senior level in sales role with a TC of $500K. Not a VP or CXO yet, and that's where I want to go as the next step in my career. Over the past 25 years, did sales (10-12yrs), delivery(5-8yrs), Strategy & ops (1yrs), and Product mgmt. (1-2yrs). I still believe need to sharpen my skills, so focusing on transferring to S&O or Prod mgmt. role in my current company. Makes sense?

I am open to learning from everyone.. young / old / single / married / successful / struggling or any other categories .... everyone has some experience that you can learn from...

ok boomer

Additional context - I am not really sure which direction I want to go in... cio vs cro vs cpo vs cso etc... so I will keep exploring. Any recommendations on how to go about focusing on 1 direction?

CRO seems like the best bet based on background.

You generally need a deep spike in something so specialist path is probably more common. The one generalist role that I can think of which can lead to what you’re describing is chief of staff.

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

Hi Fishes,
I've been offered for Engineering expert position at Novartis India. I've received offer letter 2 weeks back and my DOJ is updated to Mid December. I told the HR that my current company's last working day is on mid January and resend the offer letter with mid Jan as my DOJ. But they told that they can send the revised offer letter 3 weeks before the joining date.
Is this normal process? Has anyone gone through similar experience?

Currently 25 years old.
Goals:
* Own a home in a HCOL
* 2 kids (eventually)
* Retire at 50 on $125k/year.

Envelope math:
* $125k/year would require an investment portfolio of ~$3M.
* Targeting a $2M home (split with partner)
* 2 kids - $1M to raise both (including college fund, split with partner)
* $500K buffer for unexpected expenses
* 33% tax

Therefore, 6.5-7M retirement savings needed. To hit this (assuming 6% return after inflation), I’d need to save ~$110k/year.

How does this sound?
